What sized maps do ya'll play on?

So now the vote comes up, The Iridium Corp has the most votes, but I don't want them to win the proposal. Who do I vote for? Myself? If everyone votes for themselves, Iridium wins. Who of the others can I vote for to get them to win instead of Iridium? Maybe the Altarians? I vote for them but they don't vote for themselves and Iridium wins anyway. We need some politics here. Maybe UFP proposals should be announced X turns before the voting begins, during which time you could w
It depends what map sizes you are playing on. If you are on a big map colonizing new planets every turn you may need growth. I find on a medium sized maps my planets have hit max pop already by the time I've researched my first few techs.
Funny I never research or get growth. All my colonies seem to max out pretty soon without it, even with multiple farms.
I'm three games and 60 hours in, and I've never used any life support systems. If I need extra range I just build cheap starbases so I can min-max load my ships with more weapons and defenses. I also never research tourism, or any of the military ship support systems. Am I missing out on anything? What do you always skip?
On the starbase menu near the top center you can choose which model constructor to use. Have to do it at all bases I think though.
Thanks for the advice! Think I'll try a normal "knife fight" next. I started another game before everyone wrote here. I did 3 gifted opponents on a medium map. Two I'm fighting against and winning. The third i want to be friends with because we have same benevolent ideology and role playing reasons but they are running away with the game, so much more powerful than everyone else. And I dont think they want to be friends yet because "You are ripe for conquest ---". When I take
My first real game I played on normal everything, medium sized galaxy with three opponents. It was really hard and I just survived long enough to build an ascension gate on my homeworld while my borders were being destroyed and taken over. It was epic. I also learned a lot about the game. My second real game i played on small with three opponents again, this time with better game knowledge and a lucky-ish start regarding planets. By the time I spotted all three other civs I was much m
Controlling the battles would make you win more, which sounds like a good thing. But it would make controlling the battles almost mandatory. No one is going to auto-resolve if it is sub-optimal and costs you ships, the whole game is about maximizing efficiency. Having to watch and control every battle would bog the game down and make an already super-long (and some would say tedious) game even longer (and more tedious). Especially on larger maps this would get out of control.
