Looking at the dates of the last two posts, this seems to be a thread that was dead, so I'm not sure if replying to it will have any value. My AI programming is very limited. I am not a programmer, and do not have a background in programming. But I have programmed AI for NWN for many years, if that lends me any credibility. And I am a frequent player/modder of Civ III if that, too, will lend me any credibility. Off the top, I

AI Hugging... so, when the AI factions that like me have tons of ships in my ZOC, they are actually trying to guard my stuff? I had always thought they were just trying to project power because they didn't trust me (or the AI equivalent of that) or something, and were positioning for rapid response in case I declared on them. They *do* tend to hover around my deepspace starbases, particularly if I am using one to gather up troop transports. Oh my...

I got it to fire. The 2 tests were on graveyards, and my fleet was only the 1 ship. Therefore, I'm not sure changing roles would have much impact. But I will try it out. Thanks. I'm equally interested in hearing/reading about the aesthetic success people have had with this (and if this damn laptop auto zooms me in one more time I'm tossing it out into the snow).

I realize that carriers do this already, but last night I started experimenting with using the offset option to create little mini fleets around my cruisers. I was only able to see it in actual battle twice so far. For the ship I tested, the mini ships were static in the designer, and it looked a little funny to me in actual battle how the minis kept perfect pace and position with the main cruiser. I put a laser battery on the mini though, and in battl

How certain are you that the AI will not use designs that lack parts? I am 100% sure I saw the AI using my ship named "Star Explorer Template 7" (or maybe Star Cruiser Template 7), and 98% certain that ship had zero parts. But is possible I left a part there by mistake when I saved it. I reverse made that particular template - I had the ship, then stripped it down to save it as a template.

Thanks for the info. I finally made a super star destroyer I like, and want it to be unique to my empire. I'm going to be pissed when I see the AI using it. Hopefully the AI doesn't max out the Hyperion Shrinker. I always go for fully Dense, plus all the mass reduction techs, plus maxing the Shrinker, so maybe most of my warship designs won't be usable the AI. On the other hand, maybe I'll start designing more shi

I'm sorry to ask this, I should probably know the answer by now, but it has only lately started to bother me. 1) I hate when the AI uses my ship designs, I mean, when the AI uses the designs I am using in a given current game. I like my designs, within a game, to be unique to my faction. How can I prevent other factions from using my designs? My current understanding is that if I am using, say, Terran ships, then any other faction using Terran styl

Lot of interesting and good ideas. I particularly liked the idea about different types of invading troops, like having armored divisions, shock troops, etc. There seems to be a divide between those who don't want to make invasion too detailed or multiple turn, and those who do. Someone suggestion having the option in the start menu for detailed invasions, probably a good idea. There doesn't need to be much change if the design

I like it. I really like it. I was able to get my first map up, insane sized, in a couple of hours. A nice feature is being able to rename an entire system at once. One of the first issues I had was that the star names get funny when you plop systems (using '4' instead of 'IV' for the 4th planet, for example, and adding a random number at the end of a body's name), but then I discovered you can rename an entire

Hello! Was thinking it might be nice to have more ship icons, and be able to pick which icon we want a design to have - separating icons from roles.

but outside of war (which you'd only want to be in with one race at a time) Nothing wrong with going to war against multiple factions at the same time. I don't play with victory conditions, and for the sake of stability, or so that I can take over some clusters without completely eliminating a faction, I often transplant factions from one area of the galaxy to another. Multiple-front wars expedites this. </p

My limit of before its tedious is controlling about 5 fully loaded fleets. What the hey? I sometimes have 5 just guarding 1 source of antimatter. And I go through the trouble of naming the capital ship in each fleet, and naming each fleet after an officer, and renaming the fleet (meaning reapplying the old name) every time a new ship joins it - which means I'm keeping track of the f

1) What happens if you max out Ideology points? Does the game crash? - I have all victory conditions set to off. I prefer to play an unending game. But I have 2x ideology generators on all of my planets. If I max out the points, what will happen to my game? 2) How do the difficulty settings affect the AI? Do they get bonus colony ships/production/science? Will it increase their rate of expansion and research? &nb

To the original poster... check out the wiki page and "ship roles." If you don't want your missile boats being shot at right away, assign them a different role. Put your missiles on yor capitals and guardians, give your guardians a few boosters so they can quickly find range, and there you go. I think the set up is actually pretty good. Right now, you have the option of deciding in what line your weapons are placed, and what they will target,

I'm not sure what you're "noping" here. The post prior to yours was simply pointing out that beams with enhanced range can outrange missiles. He wasn't saying that weapons determine starting position (although, in a sense, they do, since roles are by default based on added parts). Your post seems to indicate just the opposite, though, but I am guessing that you meant to say "BECAUSE" they start as far back as possible, instead of "SO." &nb

How do sensors help in a fight? They don't in battle, as someone pointed out above. I just like the 'feel' of having a detection ship in my fleet. On a practical level, though, sometimes your scout shit gets blown up. Its rare, haven't seen it in GC3 yet, but I've had it happen, and then your fleet is effectively blind. So a nice super-charged scout ship is great, but I like to toss a few sensors on an in-fl

A not-so-sub-topic is the role of carrier modules, and the ship roles of the fighter spawns: Assault drones (Escort, small, mixed weapons and mixed defenses) Interceptor drones (Interceptor, tiny, beam) Guardian drones (Guardian, tiny, kinetic) *as per the wiki So having at least 1 carrier per line can help soak up shots from the enemy, as once the enemy ships have classified which type of ship to target, if there is more t
