I can play with a large map, with the distant stars mod. I have a dual-core, and rarely suffer slowdown. I suppose it depends on the type of computer and graphics card though...

I was very disapointed when I discovered how useless the gas planet ability was... I had built a starbase at a gas giant that was a chokepoint. I figured that giving it the self-destruct mechanism would be great considering the explosive gas. End of game, I blow it up to see what happens. Yep, major disapointment... Sounds cool, but I can see it being exploited in multiplayer. What if someone devotes their gameplay to getting a planet-busting weapon? If they turtled until they got a few of the weapons then they would just blow your key worlds to pieces and effectively win, or they could blow up the planet with your main fleet in, meaning that there's pretty much nothing you can do to stop an assault until you rebuild the fleet, which would take a while. Cool in theory, but no idea how to make it

Well, my marines roughly follow British organisation, if you know about that, but I add stuff like officers tagging along with an individual section (6 privates, a corporal and lance-corporal, (with exception of specialists who may have different ranks) consists of two 4 man fire teams). My platoons are made up of three sections, and each platoon has a lieutenant and a sergeant.
