Agreed that variety and diversity are good however we need to keep in mind that an end goal will likely result in similar products. For what its worth, I think we can look at history for a good set of events / mega events see reply #3 for an example. To look at world history and see what plagues and or (depending on outlook) early biological warfare that played out and reeked havoc on civilizations in just our small piece of the pie would be refreshing. From what I have gathered it comes down to what fighters add to the game (without unnecessarily increasing complexity both development and resourcewise). Do we include fighters because you want to circumvent fleet cap? Does having 100 fighters with 1 of each weapon and no defense increase the play-ability of the game? You cite diversity but what is the net gain in said diversity? Both for the player and for the developer?

Just my $.02: GalCiv II was great in its own way and if it didn't appeal to certain people that's fine. I would like to begin this post with admitting my deep sadness that we have had no confirmation on Linux (or Wine) compatibility even though Steam has opened up a section for Linux games.
