I thought some of the commentary on Stardock was interesting. In particular, the supposition that Stardock gamers are a different breed and that the distribution model that works for Stardock would not work with FPS gamers.
I thought that argument was a load of BS myself. I play FPS and RPGs as well as RTS and TBS, the reason I've bought Stardock's products is a combination of them having great games, having great support for those games and being anti-copy protection. <

I found the novolith cannons pretty useful in this one, so TEC would be my recommendation. Multible Kol's and Marza's doesn't hurt either.
That's true enough, but if you take that point of view you might end up like the pirates in that other post about "copy-protection biting them in the butt" - can't be bothered to go back and get the actual post... I think the point is that if there's a type of copy-protection on the game (obviously Sins doesn't, but this is an example) that checks throughout the gameplay itself whether or not the game is pirated, and, if pirated, it dumps the game, then pirates are going to be thinking "g
CityMan, "-" and "=" my friend. The first is slow down, the second is speed up. Really takes the tedium out of crushing the last few bits of resistance.
Wow that's useful info, these hotkeys weren't even on the keycard that comes with the premium edition
I agree with the OP, the game is challenging up to a point and then it just takes forever to mop up the enemy. I think it's mainly due to the pace of the game in general - when you're having exciting battles you don't notice the 2-3 hours of fighting, but then you sure do notice the 1-2 hours of mopping up the enemy. In standard RTS like War3 for example you spend the same proportion of time mopping up but you only spend 20 minutes fighting, the 10 minutes it takes to mop up the enemy doesn't so
What tech do you find a total waste.
all the influence/culture tech is near worthless (except for actually getting the broadcast centers to start with) Anything diplomacy/bounty related is a waste of time in my opinion. I've never found a need for the TEC techs that speed up structure building or the one that protects freighters/refinery ships.
Yet another confessed pirate if I read your statement correctly. Hmmm... what would happen on other forums when such a statement is made??? It would also help if one defines just what they imagined. You said it right there. We annihilate them in SoaSE.
I think given that game developers these days are releasing more and more buggy, untested and unfinished games that often outright lie about minimum PC requirements it's not surprising that piracy is becoming more and m
Yeah I got that achievement in my second or third game and didn't even realise it, as far as I know the only bugged achievement is Pop Idol, which is currently impossible to get.
Online distribution is awesome, especially with the US dollar the way it is at the moment. Games now cost me like 50 bucks instead of 80-90 bucks. I used to just pirate most of my crap, now I can actually afford to buy it (I'm Australian too btw, we really get ripped off by the shops here).
yeah the trouble with the AI is it's smart enough to run from a fight it can't win, but not good enough to ever amass a bigger fleet than a half decent human player. This could partially be solved by adding extra difficulty levels where the AI gets bonus resources. I still like the coward AI more than the Zapp Brannigan AIs you find in most games that do nothing but send in wave after wave of their own men.
I think with Warcraft3 you've gotta remember you're comparing a game that's been out for years to a game that's been out for weeks. When War3 first game out it probably had less strategic depth than Sins has now, there were only one or two viable tactics for each race, and you would typically just mass one type of unit. The game has evolved a LOT over the course of many patches and an expansion and developed from good game to a great game. I'm hoping that Sins does that too, it's
I enjoyed Haegemonia, it did have a lot of flaws but the campaign was really fun (except for the awful voice acting haha). I think Sins is a superior game in almost every way though.
Look guys, the OP has a very good point, a lot of people don't have the time for games that last 3-4 hours a session, but still want to experience the game above the first couple of tiers and 1v1 on small maps. I don't see why you can't have faster settings as an OPTION. That's all it will be, no one is holding a gun to your head and making you play everything at twice the speed, it's simply an option for those who want to enjoy the game a certain way, it wouldn't be that hard to
Seems there's a bug with these units where you can't phase out of a system when they're being attacked, they just sit there and die while all the other units warp out. Anyone else noticed this, I've seen it 4 or 5 times now.
Not really. HW pulled it off well.
Homeworld's awkward interface and camera control was one of the reasons I never got into that game.
Nice guide, I've got a few things to add - When I'm in a FFA game vs a lot of AI I'll try and get one of the AIs to ceasefire. This makes the game much, much less tough to win. Often the "missions" the AI gives you are fairly easy to complete, like "give 1000 gold". Without the ceasefire I find the AI tends to just gang up on the player, with just 1 friendly AI it will not only take that AI out of the game but because that AI will find other targets you'll also get respite from the AIs
Nice builds. Eagerly waiting the Vasaari installment now.
This is the kind of problem that happens with all hybrid games. In the end if you're looking for a pure 4x game then there are other games out there with a lot more depth, and if you're looking for an RTS there are other games with much better tactical combat, better pacing and balance. That said, I think sins has much more potential to be a great RTS game, things like balance and pacing can be achieved with patches. Certainly when I play sins I'm most definitely in RTS mode,
I've played strategy games that try and be full 3D before, and in the end it gets awfully confusing and half the game is spent wrestling with the camera. Yes space is 3D, unfortunately a computer monitor is only 2D. Realism does not always equal fun.
From my experience, no. I had 3 on one planet and the ships took exactly the same amount of time. Although admittedly I haven't actually tried clicking on each individual factory and producing a different unit with each one, so maybe that would have worked, certainly clicking on the planet and building from there didn't make things any faster.
this game doesn't do nearly enough to prepare you for human opponents. The computer AI is easily beaten
Welcome to every RTS game ever.
It's fun single player, but Galactic Civilizations 2 is a far superior single player game by the same company and it's very similar. If you haven't tried Galactic Civ yet then I'd get that instead, even if you have then there's a new expansion coming out soon you might wanna wait for.
Woot! Let's reduce another game to memorizing and then executing the "optimal" build order and using cookie-cutter "strategy"!
Sorry but just about every game is like this, there's only a few viable first moves in chess but that doesn't make it any less strategic or fun.
So I figure my hatred and disappointment with the game has to be something on my end, becuase everyone else seems to love it.
Yes it is your end. If you have a problem with the game mechanics or the pace of the game then fair enough, but not liking the game because it's too hard is pretty unjustified when there's a perfectly good easy mode setting, and maps which don't even have pirates at all. First game I played I got smacked by pirates too, you know
With the awesome backstory and lore that they've created I think the game is crying out for a single player campaign. I would be very disappointed if there's not some sort of campaign in the first expansion.
