beta 3 impressions

the pain of downloading was worth it.

first the problems:
the music needs fixing. i get two songs playing when there should only be one and other music gets cut off when it should be playing over the background music.

would really like to have hot keys.

some technologies are too easy to research early on and later ones are too long to research.

now for the overall game views.

wow! this is so much better than i'd ever imagined. i want to be the first to say it, this is going to be the new 4x champ. as a masters of orion fan i initially saw galciv as kind of a nice independent attempt to tide me over until moo 3 came out. my how things change. galciv is the best strategy game i've ever played. it's like having the best parts of heroes of might and magic, masters of orion, civilization, space empires all combined.

i've only just started with the star base building. i think that the sb's are the ultimate feature now. they make you feel like you are really building something. i wish there were more space structures you could build. i think that would be fun. maybe in galciv ii you could have the things a star base does split up so that there is more differentiation in the look of them.

no crashes so far. the performance is good but not great on my pentium ii 600mhz.

i noticed that you can change back to an imperial form of government. i lost control of my senate and just swapped back to imperial and the penalty went away. there should be a vote before being able to change.

great job. it's gona be a late night!

Thanks. Glad you liked it. Some good ideas there.

We're still tweaking a lot of the variables. A lot of this stuff just came together in the last hours before it went up.

BTW, with so many game mechanic changes, we would very much like to hear more impressions on the game before delving too much into specific crash bug problems.

I missed previous versions, but I like the latest interface.

Would really like to be able to zoom out the main screen and to use filters on the ship/planet lists (e.g. show just ships in orbit, show uncolonised planets etc).

Keep up the good work

Wow! Thanks guys!

GJay, we have more starbase's coming don't worry.. There will be 4 or 5 different ones. The "military starbase" for example can turn into a terror star and will move around the galaxy, so that should be fun and don't worry I will make sure it's weapon of mass destruction looks really damn cool when it takes out a planet :-).

I'm another big MOO fan who was originally just waiting for MOO3 and wanted something similar as "back up". But I am totally addicted to GalCiv now, I love it!

I'm hesitant to comment on balance and gameplay issues at the moment as I am still very new to the game and have a lot to learn. One thing I know has been discussed is the option to turn off victory conditions, this would be very nice... It was a bit frustrating to lose due to a cultural victory even though I had a dominating military power and was about to unleash destruction upon the galaxy (I was building up my army in my little corner of the galaxy instead of expanding and taking sectors - so the Torians took all the other sectors and won, oops), but you live and you learn :)

We are planning on having filters on the ship and planet lists. They just didn't make it into this build.
