Multimedia pack and the game...

Only recently (like this past week) have I been able to start taking part in the beta, so I haven't been reading the board religiously until now, so if this has been brought up before, don't kill me
My computer isn't the best (AMD K6+ 450, 160mb RAM, ATI Rage w/ 4mb), so that definitely plays a role. What I noticed, was that when I downloaded and played with the multimedia pack, the game was a good deal slower. I turned off the music, no difference, changed the other display options, no difference. Uninstalled the multimedia pack, and fine again. It slows occasionally when everybody has lots of ships and is moving around at once (I also know better than to play on the massive galaxy).
So I'm wondering, in the final, is it going to be setup the same way as it is now, the game and the multimedia pack seperate, or do I have to buy a new computer to play the game? (:( I guess I'm just kinda suprised at how much adding pictures (for the most part) changed the game speed.
