3D engines and strategy games

3D engines and strategy games

I'm abstaining from this poll. I think that a well-oiled 3D engine can be used to enhance a strategy game but I'm dubious about the utility of trying to use one of the bleeding edge protocols (this has always been a problem for DirectX--it's a moving target).

Still, I think game concept, general implementation and user interface are probably much more important. I used
to play the old BASIC Star Trek game by the hour and the
Galactic Empires BBS game (for which I wrote a set of fire control scripts for my modem program). Neither of
them had ANY graphics, but still carried the day...

However, it looks like GalCiv will accept both kinds of graphics. The Battle Cruiser, for instance reminds me (may even be) the same as in the old OS/2 version. If so, then we get the best of both worlds. Right Alex?

Cheers,

Yeah! you can make the graphics with any program you wish as long as they are the right size and so on. it's one of the luxuries of a sprite based game.
