Massive early expansion seems to be a must?

In my last game, I had *the* starting location: with the 'uncommon' habitable planets setting, I had a class 19, a class 26 and a class 16 planet in the sol system. I was stunned, but the game was nigh unwinnable.
Considering I was playing with all AI players on 'normal', this may seem strange, but the fact is that starting position was in a corner, so I was only able to send my colony ships out as far as two sectors - just enough to secure two more small systems.
I told myself that's no big deal, I'll just crush a few minors or so. But the buggers were too far away, and by the time I had researched enough to reach out far enough, they already had frigates (I only had corvettes) and the wole galaxy except the Yors was against me.
So now I am thinking: is a masive early expansion really the only way? It seems impossible to play a modest game by staying put in your corner of the galaxy - you have to either have unchallenged supremacy, or crush the hell out of everyone.
Any thoughts? I am really only a builder, and I dislike conquest. Buit when you can't expand well in the early stages of the game, being a builder stops being an option (:(
