Howdy, and Thanks!

About a year and a half ago, I was posting on the old MoO3 board, and "chatted" briefly with Brad Wardell, who was clearing up some misconceptions about GalCiv. At the time, I promised I'd give it a try, and fully intended to do so, but the sour taste from MoO3, along with a couple of other really bad games, made me rethink my game buying strategy.

Pretty much, I decided not to buy anything that hadn't been run through the mill, that I couldn't find good, open discussion about, and was being actively supported by it's creators. Suffice to say, most of my game purchases this past year have been seriously pondered and researched.

After lurking around here, following the discussions, and watching the fine tuning, I finally made the decision to download GalCiv last week, and after spending over 30 hours with it, I can only say:

Thank you.

I'm not going to bother enumerating all the different things that have hooked me, for hooked I am, but I haven't enjoyed a game this much since JA, or Civ.

Thanks also to all those who've posted strategy and walkthroughs, they were a great help in getting me started, hopefully my next Metaverse submission will reflect better on my use of that help.

Great game, and just what I was looking for.

I agree. GalCiv is an excellent game, we have an excellent set of Devs and a great community.

Good to see you enjoy it. Just be careful... It's been know to interfer with RL. :)

When you're talking about classics, JA is Jagged Alliance.

Hey, Gandalf. You might want to join an empire - that way, there will be people who are grateful for every game you submit. Just, you know, if you can find one with a theme that suits you... http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/empires.asp

Subtle Matthew! NOT!!! :HOT:

Actually, it's pretty tough recruiting even hardened Tolkien fans to the Fellowship, when there's an empire just above us led by a guy called Theoden of Rohan.

Wouldn't help. My name isn't up there. I'm not the leader of the Fellowship empire - I'm merely the steward, holding down the fort until the rightful emperor returns.

Every time you post, you are an advertisement for FOTR. I understand what you're saying, though.

And a fine leader he is! You might want to take a look at the Galactic Guardians Empire at this http://guardians.galciv.org/

Wow, thanks for the welcome, heh, been so busy playing I hadn't made it back yet. Made the mistake of checking out the Library, way too much cool stuff, so I just grabbed it all. Then, compounded my mistake by DLing GC to my work computer(The SD system is awesome!), stick a fork in me, I'm done.

JA is Jagged Alliance, one of the all time greats IMO, and yes, the DL was from SD, no pirate here, heh, just a simple merchant. :)

I jus spent the past hour and a half walking my buddy, a hardcore Civ player, through a small beginner game, judging by his complete immersion and comments, I'd say he should be either visiting EB, or DLing SD right about now.

I'm definitely interested in joining an empire, and will study the choices this weekend, before I finish the Large/Challenging game I'm on now, I think I'm gonna do pretty well, my starting sector contained 4 habitable systems(no ctrl-n!), one with 4 PQ15-16 planets, and a monster PQ26 one sector away. I'm playing as the Industrialists, with speed, PQ, and economy modified, it's working out quite well.

I'm very interested in starting picks, any comments on my choices would sure be appreciated.

Those PQ26 planets always make you feel good.

You'd be welcome with the Diplomats. http://diplomats.galciv.org

For starting picks I usually take max reasearch (50% I think) and then military production for the rest. I bet there are some "optimal" choices out there, but ive abandoned that a long long time ago. These days I play for roleplaying and strategy purposes, I think out how I want my race and what kind of "attitude" I want against the other empires, and then play after that.

I too was a point chaser before (about 8 or 9 months ago), but that part of the game lost its beauty to me :)

I also enjoy writing events, have an event pack in the library right now. But as I havent gotten any feedback on it im not bothering to make any more events at the moment.

A very common choice for the higher difficulty levels is Populists, with +50/60% Diplomacy. Lets you boss the AI around a bit :)

I think Greldon has already shown you the way to go, so I'll not add another recruitment line ;)

Nah, just stay away from empires altogether, they just make you a point-chaser and you'll loose interest in the game. Thats what happend to me, I was more concerned about the score than actually having fun while playing!

So, Say No To Empires! LOL
