OT : Starflight 2

I know this is slightly off topic but I noticed a discussion in another thread concerning Space Empires 4
Do any of you remember a game called Starflight 2. This was the most immersive Space Exploration game I can rember from my youth where you got to build a relationship with the other races and there was an underlying plot to the game. I also remember you could actually land on the planets and go exploring for ruins in a landcraft.... Ah the memories....

Anyone know of anything similar?

Oh yeah Aragorn....I had both Starflight and Starflight 2. Man...they were super. did ya know that Starflight 3 is being developed? The dev team is making it as a free download game. Starflight was my first PC game. See www.starflight3.net

The only game that seems to come close is the Battlecruiser series (including the latest title, Universal Combat). Very extensive game but well worth the effort to learn. check out www.3000AD.com

Always great to hear from an ol Starflight explorer. :D

Also, the original developers of Starflight came up with a game called Protostar. It looked a lot like the Sierra games (Space Quest, etc). Not that great, really. I loved the first two. I'm glad to hear that they are coming up with a real third game.

I always loved the little astronaut that hobbled around the spaceport! LOL

I should have known there would be other StarFlight veterans around here.

Starflight 1 was the very first game I ever bought and played. I remember sliding 5.25 inch floppies in and out of my 5.25 disk drive. The final ending capped off an amazing story line. I can still recall finding mother Earth in the galaxy. Who would have ever thought that the fuel used for space travel (endurium?) was "the" sentient life form in the game.

Starflight 2 was good, but 1 was the best.

Oh yeah....I also remember the little astronaut tapping his foot at stardock if ya didn't do something after a few minutes of lack of input....LOL

I still have the full games including maps, and launch code wheel/marker.

:D

Hey, guys, this thread inspired me and I pulled out Starflight 1 this evening. Does anyone know if there is a way to get your speakers to take the signal from the internal PC speaker (sf1 uses the PC speaker)? I can't hear hardly any of the sounds.

Thanks for the help and the nostalgia!! LOL

Yep...I still have Frontier: Elite II but couldn't get it to work properly. Starflight runs great though.

Hey Amulek....glad to help with the inspiration. I haven't found a way to get sound volume increased either.

GaryT123, have you tried DosBox? It is an open source emulator, making new(er) PCs look and act like older MS-Dos machines for the old games. Its what I use to enjoy MoM, MoO1, Acsendancy and my other old MS-Dos games with sound. You can find DosBox at:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

I remember playing Elite and Star Flight 2. Very cool games. I don't agree that Battle Cruiser is anything like SF or SF2. It's more like Elite, with less fun and more screen staring from what I remember of Elite and the different BCs I've tried. YMMV, of course.

hiya StarPilot....thanks for the advice. I actually got Frontier: Elite II to work...man, it brings back lots of memories of nights with no sleep....same as Starflight.

Wow...DOSBox helps to get MOO and Ascendancy working? VERY cool...I'm gonna check it out now.

You're right about BC...it is closer to Elite than Starflight. I enjoy BC/UC immensly.

OK, so I got DOSBox. Nothing is happening. How do you actually get a game to load--I read the readme, but no dice.

Well, I just started up DosBox, and then had to mount my C: hard-drive. For Acsendancy, I also had to mount my cd-rom (it's a MS-Dos 5 game and runs its music off the CD-Rom). Then after mounting up the file system, I just used the old Dos commands (CD c:, c:, etc) swapped over to the game directories, and ran the games I wanted to play. Works fine. Automatically figured out when I wanted to use a mouse, automatically made my sound card available, automatically made the memory system behave for the game in the old ways.

Study the mount command. It wasn't used every day by us old dos gamers, so it isn't something that most people instantly know off the top of their head. ;) Once the file system is mounted, you should be able to just swap over to the game's directory, and then start it up. That's been my experiences so far.

The closest game I can think of to SF2, in game style and enjoyment factor, is Star Control 2. Terrific top-down explore-the-universe, trick-out-your-ship, solve-the-mystery/save-the-universe game. They ported the 3DO port of the PC original back to the PC just recently as freeware, called The Ur-Quan Masters. I beta'd it, it was a blast. It seems a better game by comparison today then when it was released back in the mid 90s, but then again I have a soft spot for gameplay over graphics.

Ur-Quan Masters is an excellent example of fan supported development! Played it a few months ago. I agree that it and sf2 have a lot in common. They are both excellent games!

By the way, the mount thing worked, thanks.
