Bug Reports for Gal Civ 1.19

Bug Reports for Gal Civ 1.19

If you are getting crashes, you may be asked to install SmartException from Stardock Central under the free stuff tab.

I will want any save games that reproduce bugs, particularly crashes.

Games saved under 1.19 will be only 1 file.  1.13 files should load, but you may want to archive 1.13 and backup your save games before loading just in case.  The new save game format is more robust than the old one, so future updates should not corrupt save games.

Please report typos in the typo thread.

Please give as much detail as possible when reporting bugs so that I can reproduce it more easily.

Here are copies of my current bug report spreadsheets so that you can search them for your bugs.  The one for normal Gal Civ probably has some bug reports that are redundant or have been fixed.  When in doubt, report the bug.  Also, all the version numbers for the reports may not be accurate, as I only added that field in recently and had to have a default value. So if I wasn't sure that I fixed it, I gave it the version 1.13 and left it there.

It's my hope that providing  and updating these spreadsheets regularly will cut down on the redundant reports here.  If you have a save game to reproduce a bug reported in the spreadsheets, send me the game.

This is a link to clean data files if you've mixed mods into your base install but don't want to re-install all of Gal Civ.

There seems to be a bug in the "no closer than three spaces" rule for starbase construction.I thought it didn't apllied to resource starbases
End of quote

That exception is true if it is the to be constructed resource starbase that is closer than 3 spaces. The AI shouldn't be able to park a non-resource starbase right next to my just constructed resource starbase.

2. Two CTD events, both times it happened immediately after one alien ship attacked another alien ship. Smart Exception hasn't worked for me for months so I can't be more specific.3. One hang. I had to reboot the machine to regain control.

Cari asked:
2) Do you remember if they were specific ships? Do you have the autosave before the AI ships attacked?3) Do you remember at what point it happened? Was it during the end/beginning of a turn?
End of quote

2. Sorry. It was one AI combat ship attacking another AI ship. All I caught was the "brrzzap" sound and then CTD. No autosave available. If it happens again I'll send you the autosave.

3. The hang was just after I had pressed the "Turn" button.

I discovered the following: I finish a game in v1.19 and submit. It does not submit. I reload the endgamesave and what gets loaded is not the same game I just finished, but a previous game, one I played in v1.13 I think, although I am missing another game that did not submit, but perhaps this is it, not sure. In anycase, I can reload the previous save and get the v1.19 game back, but it apparently is not saving properly or perhaps it is saving in another place.
End of quote

I am having the same problem in ongoing games. I save a game and when I go to reload it, it is something completely different. If I load autosave it works just fine, but it is not saving games properly when you manually save.

Also, this is a bit cheesy, but if I decide not to build a starbase on a resource due to the cost (or if I don't have enough credits) I can just park my constuctor on the resource and block the AI from ever harvesting it.

Another thing: The Arceans are pretty consistently below -500BC and yet they still show that they are building and researching.

Has anyone else experienced the problem with the sound and music being fuzzy? All the music is fine until you click on "Play Game". The game begins to load and as soon as the "Strategy First" logo animation starts the sound is all fuzz. (:(

On the starbases: The AIs often build two bases in my games, one on the resource field, and one directly next to it. I know that someone here has already mentioned this.

Yes, its not a bug if one of them is a resource. Thats an exception to the rule.

Just to put this in the right place (and no, I can't check the spreadsheet ... I tried and got garbage), I couldn't submit to the Metaverse on my ADSL connection, the submit screen never showed up. It did, however, work under dialup with all other conditions the same (firewall included, indeed, I forgot about it and was auto-prompted...)

Seems like alignments are all outta whack... I'm at 40% and am called demonic? 100% and merely good (but 60% and considered saintly)?

This is more of a general "everywhere" bug report. I think the tech tree has a bug (not the 1D_phasing bug). When you research Planetary Destruction it says "Terror stars, baby--we're getting closer." However, you don't need Planetary Destruction to get Terror Star. That always bothered me. I modified the tech tree to include Artificial Planets and Planetary Destruction as prerequisites for Terror Star. It makes terror star research much less cheesy. It almost doubles the tech tree for terror star, as it should.

This sounds like it should definatly go into the official version.

In this case wouldn't the bug rather be building a second "useless" starbase, next to the resource one, instead of upgrading it? Specially considering the cost of starbases. I've noticed this too, with the arceans building 10+ starbases in one single sector, 3 on resources, the others being simple starbases with no modules.

It's like they're just throwing money through the airlock! ;)

Yes, I read somewhere in here that there were some fields which had been inverted in the files.

I hope this is merely a text display issue. (It probably is because the programmer would probably use constants for their alignment breakover points - you could then just change the constants if you wanted to fool around with when alignment changes.)

I am still experiencing sound problems! >:( This has to be associated with Ver.1.19 because it didn't start to happen until I installed that mess! Is there no other player out there who has experienced this problem?

Well, I went back to the basics...I uninstalled GalCiv and then re-installed and updated to 1.2. Now everything seems to be fine. Now my question is: since I re-installed, is there anything I have to do to my Metaverse account?
no... everything remains the same :)

My end of game summary was well and truly distorted.

Some examples listed below

1)The drengin, arceans and altarians all had "earth" listed in the end of game planet screen (cant remember which field exactly, mighta been most populous)

2)I had sent quite a few billion troops and ships into battle, lost some and killed more, but the soldier and ship information panels showed 0 troops lost and 0 ships destroyed, and i think 5 enemy ships destroyed.

It was a challenging game, all bright AI on a small map and i got bout 7000 points....

Is this my actual score or is this my score calculated as above where the computer believes no comabt ever occured in the galaxy!!!!

One game so far, I've also seen the useless starbase problem. In my situation the useless one was of a different race than the one doing the harvesting. Wild guess: The resource is already taken and so they put the starbase in the square the constructor ends up in when it can't move to the resource square?

Rally points: I accidently clicked the point itself instead of the fleet. I discovered that you can set it to form a fleet--nice, but it proceeded to wipe the point as a target for every world. (Note: Every world was pointed at one point when this happened. I was building pure constructors.)

Influence: Approaching the end of the game some sectors where I was dominant were showing as belonging to the race that lived there. (Note: I had loaded a save a few turns before this point. Conceivably it's some sort of propagation bug.) (Incidently, thanks: I can now see the shading.)

Incidently, I don't know what the trade good problem is, I had no problems there. I built all but one trade good & wonder (and the last one I could have had if I had purchased instead of building it the slow way. I thought I was far enough ahead to not need to rush.) Challenging.

Improvements I would still like to see:

Constructors in the social project build.

Starbases should have 6 categories, not 5. Military, Trade, Culture, Defense, Economics, Mining. The latter would not appear if there was no resource. It should be possible to build from the main category screen--the module simply goes to the most productive option in that group. (Obviously this doesn't work too well for military--what's "best"?) Also, an auto-build function for each category. Turn it on and any constructors that show up get sucked up without a prompt.

I do like the logistics rules although I think it should be tied to empire size somehow.

I've had this problem too. I think what may happen is that the stats are only since you last loaded a saved game. That's what it looked like to me anyway.

Could be related to a bug that I've noticed in 1.20 (but wasn't looking for in 1.19) where all the permanent UP resolutions disappear upon loading a saved game.

In a 1.19 game last night I managed to beat one of the AI races to a resource and build a starbase but during the AI turn they built a starbase right next to the now claimed resource.

There seems to be a bug in the "no closer than three spaces" rule for starbase construction.

Also the Torian race started researching "Final Frontier" but I didn't get the pop-up message mentioned in the release notes Cari posted.

End of quote

Starbases on resources don't count towards the "no closer than three spaces" rule.

The popup wouldn't come up until they finished researching it.  If they went broke and didn't have any money to finish researching it, that could explain it. Also, if you have AI Tech Victory disabled, I think that it wouldn't come up.

Delete your old save games rather than trying to overwrite them.  For some reason, it's not deleting the folders when it saves in the new format, and it will always only detect the old games as long as the folders are in the directry.

Just to put this in the right place (and no, I can't check the spreadsheet ... I tried and got garbage), I couldn't submit to the Metaverse on my ADSL connection, the submit screen never showed up. A lot of people with DSL seem to have trouble with Gal Civ not detecting the internet connection.  The person who wrote the internet code for Gal Civ is now working on other projects and can't work on the internet code anymore.  The only solution that I can think of is to put in an option to not check, that could be changed in the prefs.ini file.

IrishFan: well, if you submitted it, you should see the actual score.  The summary stuff could have been messed up if it was a save game converted from 1.13.  It can be inaccurate, but I don't know if it's ever that inaccurate without being a result of save game conversion issues.
