wormholes

I have researched controlled wormholes. Am I able to create wormholes now? If so, how?
Thanks

nope. wormholes are not a part of this game, unfortunately. The tech just has that name to make it sound interesting.

No this is like create Planets, you can't do it even though you have the technology, it hasn't been put into the game.

Ah, but the possibilities if the tech could be coded to fit the name. Put several constructors at point A to build a starbase with a wormhole module (it might have to be built up several levels for balance, kind of like a terror star), build another base at point B, send ships flying between the two places for one movement point.

Now, before people get too excited thinking about the obvious benefits to a human player on a larger map, think about a scenario where it is the aliens doing that to each other and/or the human. That sounds pretty neat in my book. Imagine a small alien armada containing the necessary constructors and escort warships coming over into Terran space to built their destination starbase up and defending it long enough until a large strike force can assemble back in alien space and jump on over to trounce some human planets some time later.

Of course, this would also require smarter ship tactics that involved coordinated assaults and not the current "throw everything we can spare in an ad hoc manner at the enemy" technique. Maybe for Galciv 2?

Just ask Stardock to provide event hooks for creating planets and anomalies instead of just win/lose conditions. We could script these techs into something worht having with the scenario editor.
Controlled wormholes would mean you can create one somewhere, but if you go through it, you do'nt know where you end. Would be very useful as a defensive weapon to put around your star systems, as it'd require survey ships/rangers to take them out, but not as an offensive weapon.

Sounds more like a star gate to me, however I know what you mean.

I just figured it makes a cool name, like most of the techs. Afterall if you listen to the intro it says a hyperdrive allows insant travel anywhere in the galaxy - that not in the game! ;).

Would be interesting to have stargates as big and expensive structures to run and worm hole tech allows you to build cheaper versions, possibly with ship size restrictions or restrictions on the number of ships through per turn and maybe the cost reflected pership going through.

If you look at the anomalies, some of them are called wormholes (those that either teleport you away or bring you 25% of the tech you're researching for free).

Doesn't the storyline say that there WAS stargate technology (as described above), but they tore them down when humans invented hyperdrive?

It would be nice, though, if researching "controlled wormholes" would enable you to build a controlled wormhole. which would have a stargate-like entrance, but the exit could be anywhere you chose. To make the tech less unbalancing, it would be VERY expensive to build and maintain, and to go past the -500bc threshold means that you have to SHUT DOWN the wormhole until you get out of debt. Every time you actually USED it, you would be charged a ton of money. This would tend to eliminate unscrupulous use of the thing because the wormhole could shut down right after using it, which would mean that if you were outside your sphere (or whatever shape it happens to be) of influence, you couldn't do anything but high-tail it home (since you'd go into hibernation). You could easily program the instantaneous jump by temporarily assigning a speed to a ship that was sufficient for that ship to make it to the exit point in one turn. The exit point would extend your boundaries as if you had a starbase planted there (until you moved the exit, of course). The amount of money used per use could be determined by some formula involving the orignial sticker price of the starships to be moved. Therefore, moving a few fighters would barely register as a drain on the treasury, while moving a terror star would probably shut the thing down!

Any more suggestions?

A better idea might be super-duper sling shots :SURPRISED: ! If you could build a starbase in your home sector that will throw ships up to 5-10 parsecs away (in a controlled manner) so that your ship would end up where you wanted it. This could lead to super-duper sling shot interdictors so that you could build a starbase that would stop invasion fleets from dropping in on your home planet sectors >:( . Just a thought.

That sounds like a good idea, too. :)

These catapult existed. Put 20 +2speed starbases in your home sector. You could now catapult your ships up to 4 sectors away in one turn.
Since the number of starbases is now causing problems, it cannot be exploited that much, but still exits.

Well, you can still squeeze 8 or 9 SB in one sector, then put another batch in an adjacent sector to create a directional slingshot. I've often considered creating a string of speed SBs to create an "expressway" (for a planned invasion route or for the "empty" sectors of a major trade route). I've never bothered as by the time I can afford that many starbases, the game is almost over...and no, I haven't played on gigantic maps! I'm too slow for that. -- HtL
