Is it difficult to make skins? As in do you have to write a program or something? (Please excuse my newbieness)

I don't think you need to write much code anymore, but you do need to have a certain amount of proficiency in creating graphics and a good imagination.

A graphics editor of your choice
An application to skin (and possibly tools to create the skins)
A fair share of imagination/creativity
And a whole lot of time

Those are the main "ingrediences" for make skins/themes

No, its not really difficult once you know Skin Studio. It is just time consuming. I've heard that Treetog, a great windowblind artist, takes between 40 to 80 hours to make a skin. I started my latest one about 1-1/2 months ago and it looks like it will be another 4 months before its finished.

No, all you need is a little computer graphics experience and Skin Studio.
