Suggest a good backup program?

This seems to be a pretty good one. I tried the demo and it was fairly easy to use. It's gotten some good ratings also.

I use this. http://www.symantec.com/driveimage/ Used to be made by PowerQuest, but now Symantec bought them and the software.

SyncBack does what you want. That's how I have mine set up, set to copy files from one drive to another. I have several profiles running, one for MyDocuments, one for OD another for my Outlook pst etc. Most are set up to run once a day, though I have MyDocs set to run in the background - that updates every 30mins. It will also synchronize - that is keep two folders identical instead of copying one to another (back-up).

Best of all - it's free...

I also use DriveImage 7.0 for complete drive back-ups.

I bought Drive Image 7.0 but if you read my Hard drive thread you'll see that it's not all going well. That may not be the fault of the software though. I'm sure I'll get the problem resolved, but DI7 was bought by Symantec, so trying to get help from their site is an exercise in futility [and frustration!]
Some of the IT guys at work swear by NOrton Ghost, but again that leaves you dealing with Symantec's maze-of-a-website if you need support.

I have Used Norton Ghost for at least 5 or 6 years, and it has consistantly been a performer. I do a base install of all my apps, and Image the Drive, and when I need to restore, I just pull the Image from an Acorn 55GB USB/1394 2 drive.Average Restore time 3 - 4 minutes, with a 3 GB compressed Image. you can set it up to Incrementalize Backups, but I usually manually Store, important stuff and burn them off gradually. I figure the longer a system is used the more corrupt it gets, so backing it up is pretty pointless. Backup the Doc's Emails, and what not manually and Wipe and go from Scratch.

BTW Norton Ghost is Uber Simple
Boot with Ghost Boot Disk, or CD w/ Ghost Boot Disk as Boot image Floppy Emu

Choose Partition/ from Image

The rest is just where to get the Image from or Where the Image Goes

CygnusXII....Drive Image 7 is simpler....how about backups done FOR you while you are still working within the OS drive being backed up?

You can set it and forget it.....and have scheduled full drive Images backed to the location of your choice.

Now and then it pays to delete the older ones if not needed.....you 'might' run out of drive space....

 

For normal file backup, nothing beats Fuzzy's recommendation....again totally seamless and transparent....

Well, I can give it a shot, although I am of the slash and burn crowd.
I used to do OEM Support for a local machine builder, and got so used to seeing systems, totally thrashed, and in need of reformatting, and am so used to doing that, that a clean base image. Is all that I really go for. Although the older I get the less I want to fart around with it (reinstalls.) I just get the willies, when a install, is on a machine for more than a couple of months. Little program Turds, in the nooks and crannies, possible Spyware, OS Holes, and God knows what else, and Incremental Backups, just feel like compounding the problems. I guess I am biased, but I am going to check out the Proggie that fuzzy Mentioned. Free is cool, and I can always pass it on to my clueless relatives.

Retrospect. You get it for free when you buy a Maxtor OneTouch

I am looking into all these suggestions. Been having some major browser issues, especially logging into the site. But I am interested in looking at some of these, they sound promising.

I'm with Fuzzy, I use SyncBack to backup my entire home AD domain. Great product...and free.

PowerQuest (or Symantec now) Drive Image is what I use

I have found DriveImage 7 to be very dependable, but Acronis TrueImage is faster.

Thanks everyone, since so many people have suggested it I will look into DriveImage 7, the SyncBack program looks like a possibility also. May try it first being as it is free, that is always a plus.

TrueImage 8 from www.acronis.com allows you to keep working while the image file is being created. Also does incremental images. Works very easily.
