The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Pretty alright, I guess. :)

Some of us, like yourself, are on gaming sabbaticals but we have others who have shouldered the load and kept us slightly ahead of the chasing pack.

The role-playing/story writing seems to have slowed down but hey, people here should do what seems fun to them. No point trying to get everyone to start writing just for the sake of writing.

I do miss quite a few of us who have not been posting much so hopefully, the Fellowship Halls will get very lively again when they return.

We do still have guests popping by after their visit to the Prancing Pony and their company is much appreciated.

I needed to take a break, but I feel re-energized now.

Say what you will about the Metaverse, it certainly has helped retain my interest in this game. I normally play a game 3 or 4 times and then shelve it. But the Metaverse has kept me 'plugged in' long past my normal gaming half-life.

Good to see us still bobbing around at the top of the ladder. :)

Ray, I'm not sure if you read the Pirate threads any more, but Wombat just signed off in the POSS thread. I hope he was just blowing off some steam, he was one of the more amusing characters in the Metaverse.

Thanks for the heads-up, H50. I posted as soon as I could think of what to say.
Hope he reconsiders his decision.

I don't think Wombat is the only one who is mad right now. I hope we don't see the same
kind of fallout where players leave like our last ToT.

No worries, I hope so too. Maybe he just needs some time to clear his head? Reading the Aussie banter is one of the main joys of visiting this forum.

Re-read his post. He said he needed a break and so maybe he's just going off to cool down.
Hopefully he will be back.

BTW, thanks for all the congrats, people. Appreciate it.

Thanks Gerakken. :)

You missed the fury of our second Times of Trouble. We are currently in the eye of the storm.
Don't think it's over yet.

Ray the Wandering Diplomat...congrats! :CONGRAT:

Man, I hate to see the mess going on. But I kind of figured ppl were getting fed up with the Anomolous scores. One thing's for sure...I'm staying out of it.

Ray,

Between your unbelievable score and your new Diplomat ranking, perhaps you should change your nick to Ray - Lord of the Rings. ;)

Congrats. I have wanted to congratulate you on your score for a while, but I didn't want to jinx you again. Now, you're so far ahead I don't think I could.

I have poked fun at the Fellowship in the GROSS threads, but I do so as a friendly rival. I think the Fellowship is pretty cool...

Cheers,
Cypher

Thanks for the congrats, Theoden and Cypher.

Really appreciate it.

Cypher, when did you jinx me the first time? :D

No worries about poking fun at me. I'm glad I'm such a source of entertainment for so many. :D

The IRC stats? http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=89927#90140

Or the full chat logs? Only loggers such as GreenReaper and Idleprocess have full logs, I believe.

When anyone(using a full irc client.. not sdc) is in there they too can log the rooms that they are in. I always log and capture all conversations while i'm in the rooms or private chat.

just to protect myself in case someone says i said something when i didn't.. and to paroose through later for story ideas..

eg: GROSS reconbs that they don't poach polayers from other empires.. I have been propositioned several times and i have them all loged.. not mentioning any names... oh.. and as part of a bribe i was even offered a seat in their senette by someone who can do it too.. however they weren't the only ones.. others have tried too.. there is nothing wrong with this.. except that they lie about it afterwards.. and i can't stand ppl who lie... This is one reason I call GROSS pirates.. and ppl who left the ANZACS Deserters... they all surcome to bribes etc.... I know that this post is going to get myself into more trouble.. but i do have the proof to everything i say
(and pontous i know it wasn't you... it was some of your senaters and overloreds... this is why i always state that nothing i write is meant personally.. its all in the fun of the game)

With all that being said.. Stardock has to moniter whats happening on their networks .. after all they are the ones paying for the bandwidth and are trying to keep the peace.

Although many logs may never be looked at with the human eye.. to get the stats they (I believe) get parsed and scanned by a script that picks out all these statistics.. I can't believe that greenreaper makes note of how many times someone talks to someone else or shouts.. or how long they talk for..

Ray,

I wrote about you as in the GROSS thread (Staffa's retirement party story)- you probably didn't see it. The next morning, Staffa was back and had reclaimed #1 (I think he was in third at the time).

Now your long, impressive history (especially of maso games) makes you look unbeatable...

BlueSteel, all the ...'s in your posts make it very hard (for me at least) to read.

Please don't take this the wrong way. It's just friendly advice.

The P*ssed thread is very interesting and Frogboy's comments were helpful. The harder games need more metaverse points per game and the lower difficulty scores need less points per game. If you are dedicated enough then a decent gamer can still overtake a great gamer who rarely posts a game but we are talking right now about the actual metaverse points per game expressed as a degree of difficulty.

It was interesting to try the GCCG and there are some good strategies that can be brought into games of more difficulty. The GCCG has made my tough games more fun. EBZ is very creative and we should play whatever level we want. He did not cheat or even create this imbalance but simply exploited a weakness that was not obvious to less creative minds.

But if one looks at the point difference that Cotal found on large games and I found on tiny games, there really does not seem to be enough point boost given to harder games that take longer to play IF the metaverse is supposed to reflect the "best" players. It is nice Stardock gives a bonus to those who play more often because I have rarely broken 15k but right now the metaverse scores seem unbalanced toward helping the frequent submitters at lower game difficulty. My gut still tells me the "best" Gal Civ players can win at maso, gigantic while many of us can't win at that level. Part of it is what Stardock and gamers want the metaverse to reflect. So let's keep our cool and keep playing so this gaming community lasts longer. I look forward to a Gal Civ 1.1 with a tuned up metaverse point system and less crashes to desktop. LOL.

Anyway that is my 2 bc worth. Everyone take care and keep submitting games. :)

Well said, Rick. I wholeheartedly agree.

I'm very late, but, congrats, Ray! You've been a constant helper here for a long time and it's nice to see you get rewarded for it. Well deserved! :D

Apparently this "cranking guide" is causing quite a stir. I'll have to check it out when I get some time (away from the editor and actually playing, that is). ;)

On a side note, I was thinking of changing my nick to reflect my new empire membership. Can someone
give me a link again? I had it around here somewhere ... but just can't seem to find it right now. :(

Thanks Theoden for your Bardic tales. They are entertaining, to say the least.

Go to www.wincustomize.com . Login with your galciv.com account and go to edit account. Then select change nick.

You have a different player name so you probably wouldn't forget that you should continue to submit under Malphurs.

And thanks for the congrats. :)

Ok you say the people that offered you a senate had the power to? How could an overlord, as you say in your last sentence, who has no power to move anyone around in any empire, do that? You're allegations aren't making much sense.

In G.R.O.S.S. only two ways into the senate. I put you in in consultation with the senate or you meet the autorequirements. No other person can make the offer on their own. Of course if you meet the autorequirements you're in no matter what or if you are a legit emporer, the offer is made. Perhaps that was the "bribe" you were offered?

Besides, Senate doesn't get you anything in our empire. It's an honorary title and this has been stated many times.

as to bribes what bribes have we offered any of those that chose to leave the Anzacs? You seem to imply that since you were offered these things, heretofore unsubstantiated that they were too. Where is your proof of this? Send that log. None. In fact, Are any of the south sea's gang Senators? no. That's evidence they weren't offered anything. Only one of our members came to us from Anzac. I was not privy to the discussion but he came to us... We didn't know he was even interested untill he told one of our members.. Now they did want to be known as what they are known as, and have their own thread. That was perfectly fine with us but if you want to consider that a bribe and that they weren't already gone from Anzac here's the blue pill. You'll wake up in your bed. More power to ya.

Now you say it's nothing personal, yet you stretch logic and the truth. It's one thing to say you were offered, I have no proof of such. But irrespective of such, you make the quantum leap to oh they gave everyone that entered bribes....? Hyperbole of the worst sort. It may not be personal but it crosses the line.

I wasn't even there. But untill someone in my empire confirms what you say, I'll not believe it all that much. But do send those logs...

I see you are about to join the 100k club. Good job! :)
