The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Same goes between Fellowship and MWC. We used to cross swords quite a bit vying for spots 1 to 3.

But I've joined the MWC forum and have posted there. Have also gotten to know a few of those fine folks over there. Had discussions on strategy and role-playing with them.

In fact, Gerakken, Idleprocess and myself are working now at launching a fiction website for all.

I'm not surprised by the latest Metaverse scandal--it's been clear for a long long time that Stardock wants us to play the game in the way that they think is most fun, rather than the way we think is most fun.

Hmmmm, that was EXACTLY what I was thinking too. Just didn't wanna say it because it might cause more tension between me and them.

Yep - that's cool with me too. In a sense, we are all "at war" with each other all the time, striving for Metaverse points and superiority. Each side, in turn, cheers when it hits the top, or passes another empire in the standings - it's the way it was meant to be.

In any community, there will be situations where individuals feel differently and disagreements occur. My hope regarding those situations is that honest expression is the order of the day and after tempers cool, everyone moves on with no lasting breaks in communication.

GROSS has always had a fierce pirate ethic - striving to reach the top, taking booty, kicking a***; it's an exciting reason to be part of the crew. Social factionalism - "we dont talk to them cause we dont like them" - at the board or chat level is counter productive to the development of a healthy, thriving gaming community. I, too, enjoyed last night's chat. As Voltaire said: "I may not agree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it." (Hope that's right - Hurley, where are you when I need you?)

I luv ya Obi - and when are you going to come round and godparent one of my nippers?

I'm in trouble. The breaking event (and Frogboy's post a minute ago on his views) is so enthralling that I've no mood to work! :)

Must stop reading forum posts .... arghhhh...

OK, maybe I've been taking the whole "declaration of war" thing too seriously. Anybody watch South Park? Had somebody at work tell me that I'm acting like "Tweek" the coffee kid lately. TOO MUCH CRAP going on at work and home, where I can't explode, and this game and forum are a nice break - ironically, I probably blow up too easy when I'm in here because of it all.

I thought they were all grown up at this point. Gerakken and Kit saddled me with Jar-Jar as an apprentice already. Want me to use him as a target dummy for the munchkin? Need a name that isn't "Wombat" oriented just to set him apart a bit...how about "Darth?"

Don't take it out on us! We're your buddies.
Oh wait, I guess that's what buddies are for.

Ray casts Anti-matter shell.

Ok, go ahead. :)

Quack bashed the table repeatedly as he made his speech.

"We will not sit idly by and let the heathens take over the Metaverse! Fellowship, MWC, ANZACs, you all suck monkeys balls! Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war! You are either with us, or against us. Let there be WAR!"

Quack cut off the transmission and turned to his generals.

"Okay, that's done, let's get this show on the road. Fuel the anti-matter missiles - I want them launched before any of those guys login."
"Um, sir, this isn't a MMORPG. It doesn't work like that."
"Fine, let's schedule a war. Call their secretary. How's Thursday at 9? Can we get both teams on-line by then?"

The generals looked uneasily at each other.

"Well, what am I supposed to do?" demanded the duck. "Look, I'm sick of this. We've got a massive battle fleet, and we can see where the other empires are on the galactic map! Deploy the fleet, and wipe them out! Now!"

"We don't know how to get there." one of the generals sheepishly replied.
"Just follow the bloody map!"
"Um, they don't teach inter-galactic navigation at schools nowadays. No-one remembers how it works."
"So what now?"
"You could get back on the comm-link and call them some more names."
"Is that all? What the hell do I pay you guys for, anyway?"

One of the generals pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket.
"Here's a list of names I prepared earlier, sir!"

The duck looked at the list, and sighed.

"You're fired."

Quack made a mental note to call Hurley. The diplomat would have to write up a lot of peace treaties tonight...

Just last night (for me), Wombat, EBZ, Blue, Cotal, Matthew Downie and myself were enjoying ourselves at a galactic ball at the chat room.

Forgot that Quack was also at the Ball swimming in the punch! Sorry Quack. :)

Btw, I hope you didn't mind the mix-up with the medals in my last chapter

??

Have not been following up with the stories in the POSSE thread if that's what you mean. I was hoping that those stories (which I'm sure were great) could be reproduced in our Galciv story site so that it would be easier to follow but I agree with Wombat that it is probably too much work. :(

So... yeah, I don't mind. :)

I kinda lost the plot once people started talking about Programming AI and playing Tick 'tac' Toe . . . hehe.

But I'm still keen on the role-playing Idea! :D . I'd like to be a very large oestrogen driven hulk! Amazonian akaf Diablo II! >:( Aggghhh!

You talking about the PBEM role-playing idea, Cotal?

I emailed JordanVmp yesterday and she replied. She said she's too tied up already as the Gamemaster of three concurrent games so she can't run one for us. :( She was saying that she would be interested to join as a player if anyone else wants to run it.

So I asked her if she knew any other PBEM GMs. I also suggested that maybe I could post an OT post in this forum to ask if anyone is willing to be the GM for a group of players from this forum.

I'm quite excited about role-playing with you all. But we need a GM to do most of the work for us lazies. LOL

I think I will make a few posts here on the mechanics of PBEM role-playing just so that everyone is on the same page. :)

The drama unfolds in the P*ssed thread minute by minute. Gripping stuff.

Congratulations Ray thats really something and well deserved too I might add!

You've been answering alota questions on alota topics for alota people for alota time now . . . ;)

I'm scared to look at that thead EBZ and some of the others aren't holding back and its getting a bit too hot for me! Still pent up frustrations regarding these scoring issues were bound to surface sooner of later I suppose . . . :SURPRISED:

Congrats to Ray for becoming a Diplomat! :CONGRAT:

I check back in after a week and all heck's breaking loose around here. Crazy...

Well, Ray, now that you're a diplomat, you can jump in the middle of all those threads and be diplomatic :D

You offer me a suicide mission, Quack?

The maelstrom of the Times of Troubles have once again returned to the shores of our Metaverse.

Even my considerable powers of magic will not be enough to quell this.

We'll ride this out, as we did the first. Interesting to see how the landscape will change after this, though.

And I missed Cotal heading back to the ANZACs, too. Good for you Cotal, home is where the heart is. ;)

And how the heck did I jump up 12000 points without playing for 2 weeks? Funny are the ways of the Metaverse.

Tomorrow is a new beta, I will play another game then.

There was a Meta-wide ageing recalc a short while ago. IceMole spotted it when we were discussing about oldies' scores getting aged. You probably grew another month block.
