The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Hey MP, good to see you.

Just looked at Frogboy's story. Combine that with the Torian backstory: "Their power was allegedly innate, that is, they were able to create the things they needed instinctively as an extension of themselves. As a result, the Dread Lords had no need of industry or manufacturing." Could the Fellowship be distant, fallen descendents of the Precursors?

Ray, let me know if you feel like putting together a collaborative maso guide sometime. It might encourage people to play more masochistic games (though it might encourage Frogboy to go and make maso ten times harder).

That's a great idea, vincible. Would prefer that than a Ray's guide. In fact, we can probably start off by collating all those Maso strats lying around in the Strat forum and in posts from Maso players such as Staffa. Then we give reference to them in the guide aka Orion Sector. Difference is that this guide is completely focused on the Maso level.

Hmmm, I can sense a genocide to come in the future from Ray.

Against the Arceans? I've nothing personal against them you know, just business. :D

I meant against non-maso players.

What's wrong with a Maso Strategy Guide? I don't think it alienates anybody. I mean, you released a Cranking Guide. Does that mean you're saying something about those of us that don't crank?

BTW, this wasn't meant as a criticism, EBZ. I think we all appreciate your efforts. Just like I think everybody would appreciate Ray and vincible's efforts. :HOT:

Just submitted my game. A measly 3k more for a game that took a lot more effort as compared to Crippling.

Well, I guess I will drop back to Crippling and take it out on them. :D

Yikes! You played Neutral? Don't you lose points for not going one way or the other? :notsure:
I went pure evil with default AI alignments then went back to neutral. I'm trying to top both the good and neutral ladders. :D

Managed to top the gigantic ladder with my last game.

Interlude

Theoden was exhausted. His travels had led him far from the comforts of the Prancing Pony, and though he had reached his destination, he knew his journey was far from over. So much to do and so little time.

He looked up and saw the name of the only inn in this hamlet. The Wizard's Finger. Not exactly a name which invoked frivolity and laughter. Theoden suspected the folk in this shire were a bit more serious than the jovial patrons of the Pony.

"Great...just what I need at the end of a long journey. Some depressed bard crooning some sad dirge and a pint of stale ale."

As he opened the door to the inn's common room, he was shocked to find several wenches laughing at a table and a lively tune being played by a smiling bard. The fire was burning brightly and several patrons were gathered around the hearth chatting and occasionally laughing. As a matter of fact, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Well, almost everyone. In a dark corner sat a sad looking old man with a book beside him. The old man was bent from age and weathered looking as if he'd seen more than his share of travels. A knotty can stood behind his chair with a cloak draped over it. Though he couldn't understand why, Theoden felt moved to walk over to the old man's table and sit down.

"Ho, well met, stranger! Mind if I sit a spell and inquire about this hamlet?"

"You're sitting and asking without my permission, so your question is neither timely nor useful." replied the old man.

"Hmmm...you're right. I suppose I am a bit out of line. But to make up for my oversight, can I buy you a tankard? Or maybe a goblet of wine? I am curious of these parts, and you look like you could use some respite from your thoughts."

The old man looked curiously at Theoden, but slowly nodded his head in agreement.

"Wine will be sufficient. I've long given up the adventurer's fare."

Theoden got the attention of the closest wench and had her fetch a goblet for the old man and a tall tankard for himself. After a few sips, he began.

"So, what's the story on this town, sir? As you're so close to the sea, have you had problems with pirates?"

The old man took another sip of wine and whispered "There are much greater threats than pirates in these parts, stranger. We have the occasional bucanneer pass through, but since our little village has but one tavern and very few wenches, they move along quickly. No, the threat does not come from pirates."

The old man looked around to see if anyone nearby could hear him, then continued. Theoden noticed the old man's appearance seemed to change a bit, almost as if some life came back to him. A sparkle in the eye, a bit more energy.

"There is a dwarven mine just to the north of here, in the Vetul Mountains. Only a couple hours by horse, it is. The dwarves have always been friendly with us here, but recently, they have had some strange things to say. About a month ago, the dwarves started saying they were close to uncovering something large. They did not say what, but they felt sure it was metallic. These reports continued about 2 weeks, then suddenly, the dwarves vanished. They haven't been to town for supplies, and none have seen them here at the tavern. I fear they have uncovered something dreadful. I have tried to contact them myself, but to no avail. There is one other fact. Around the time the dwarves disappeared, a large explosion or whooshing sound was heard by many of the townsfolk. It happened during the night, and many dismissed it to a passing thunderstorm or perhaps a dream. I have my suspicions about this, though."

Theoden flashed a questioning glance at the old man. The look was understood and the old man continued.

"I believe they uncovered a ship. You are part of the Fellowship, correct? Then you know that this ship is not one of the waters. I think this ship soared into the skies, even to the heavens. I'm not certain why dwarves would be interested in this, since they have such a dislike of any surrounding besides underground, but I am certain they have left. I am uncertain, however, whether their departure was planned or not of their own will."

The old man finished his goblet and stood. Theoden noticed when he stood that he was actually a very tall and strong man. Theoden suddenly realized this must be a wizard. As Theoden stood, the old man simply waved his hand and shook his head.

"No more can I talk of this. Take this information back with you to your Fellowship as I'm sure it will be of great importance to all of you."

With that, the wizard threw the cloak around his shoulders, took his staff and quickly walked out of the inn, leaving Theoden to ponder this revelation.

To be continued...not necessarily by me :HOT:

Holy cow, I'm a Commodore?!?

Just dinking around with EBZ's crank guide last night and added about 12k to my score, and now my lil yellow bars shuffled around. Almost didn't notice, and honestly not sure I take credit for it, I wasn't even playing seriously.(well, maybe I was kinda ;p )

Anyhow, glad to have added about 20k to the cause in the last few days, and may make the top 50 soon :D

Theoden, great writing, my creative juices may find an outlet in that lead...

***EDIT***

Whatever happened to the animal kingdom, and why is Wild Wombat a pirate? Personally I thought that idea was spectacular.

Thanks! I decided it might be time to join in on the storytelling, and I thought it would be interesting to have a starship full of dwarves flying around! :D

Feel free to continue the story. I am fond of the storytelling that someone starts and then someone else continues, etc. I think you get some interesting ideas out of that.

Unfortunately, Freedom Force died. Most of them joined G.R.O.S.S. but bakka is still flying about without an empire to call home.

By the way, have you seen the Fellowship's website? It's at http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv/ if you're interested. Be sure to check out the Fellowship News, it'll kinda catch you up on what's been going on!

Great. I can't do much for the next few days, though, since my comp at home seems to have melted down which means I only have computer access from work.

I'm dropping like a rock in the Metaverse =(

It's the future governor of California!! LOL

vincible: sorry, man. Hope you can get back soon. Having a home PC fry is not a good thing (experience talking).

H50,

I don't think I asked this, but I meant to. Is there some sort of Modding FAQ or guide? I've looked through the modding boards, but can't locate one. Just wondering if mods are self installing or if the user has to put them in individual files, and if so, are there usually read-me's included?
Some times you'll find a readme file, but as far as installing goes it is pretty straight forward. None of the mods I've seen are self installing.

1) Place any .pcx files (the images for an event) into the Galactic Civilizations\GFX directory.
2) For all mods other than UP Issues and Invasion Tactics, place the [.anomaly|.event|.imp|.party|.sbmodule|.ship|.tech] file into the Galactic Civilizations\Data directory.
3) For UP Issues, place the .upissue file into the Galactic Civilizations\Data\UP_Issues directory.
4) For Invasion Tactics, place the .invtactic file into the Galactic Civilizations\Data\InvasionTactics directory.

I should add that adding mods mid-stream can have unpredictable results. Better to wait until you start your next game.

:) Haven't started my next game, yet. Finished my last one at midnight night b4 last and my little girl's first birthday was last night. I'm busy tonight, too. Hopefully can start a game over the weekend!

I really don't want to mod much. Maybe just add an anomoly or UP Issue. Just didn't know how to do it!

I might add this to the Fellowship Website's "Strategy" section, if you don't mind. I think it would be handy to check out (or refer someone to!)

No worries, of course I don't mind.

You do good work with the website, sorry I couldn't help out there.
