The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

H5O,

I must disagree with your characterization of Kit as "mad." Evil? Certainly! Unscrupulous? Comes with the territory. Frequently drunk?

On the positive side, he has an incredible singing voice.

Somehow, in some way, on some unfathomable level of his psyche, this all makes unbelievably perfect sense. I will consult with some of Kit's chief advisors, Mr. Jack Daniels, Mr. Jim Beam, and Mr. Johnny Walker and report any findings when I wake up.

No worries, I think I'll consult with Jack Daniels myself and see if I can make sense of the Grossling.

It's all my fault, I know it. I should have looked after Kit when he was younger. ;)

Sadly, even Jack cannot provide the answer to the greater mysteries of the universe. I prefer to consult Jack right before passing out.

I'm leaving Galciv for a couple weeks because of various inconvenient real-life issues. The Fellowship will have to maintain its strength without my contributions.

I'll still be on the forums on occasion though.

No worries, vincible.

Do drop by when you are able.
Hope everything is okay vincible.

Good morning everybody! Still yawning. I see Kit had a little fun. I'm bald now? Well, at least in this summer heat it'll feel good... ;)

Theoden,

Do you want to help with the Altarian Star Awards page?

I will need someone to help host the awards and their stories on a web page once the awards are given out.
Sure...just nominated Gerakken myself!

:)

U might want to look around for pics for the Altarian Gold, Silver and Bronze Stars. :)

Kit you make me laugh, I needed that, thanks! Great stuff.

Happy reality-thingy Vincible . . . hope it all goes to plan.

Beware the EBZ matrix! Ahhhh . . . run to the hills!

Theoden of Rohan I'm so sorry about your hair (oh and Hawaii's too). Every follicle will be avenged! Now where's that 'witches digest' on head shrinking . . . I'm sure I saw it next to the recycle bin next to my broom stick, oh here it is! Mwaha ha ha ha . . huU!

Don't worry about me. Nothing's "wrong." I appreciate the sentiment though :)

Happy Galciving to you all!

Okay, everybody...the Jedi Republic's website was making me jealous, so I've changed ours. I had to move it to Angelfire, and unfortunately it has to have popup ads (cause of the frames), but see what you think of the site:

If everybody likes it, let Ray know and he'll change the address on the Empire page.

Oh, yeah...it's not exactly done yet. But I've linked the Newslog to it so I figured I'd better let everybody know! :)

Here's more RPG story, a mini-series if you will:

Within the Fellowship halls, Zyrixion heard the familiar footsteps of Ray The Wanderer approaching his quarters. Ray knocked gingerly to see if he was still awake, and Zyrixion let Ray into the room.
“I have news,” Ray stated importantly.
“Eh, what news?” inquired Zyrixion, the warrior bard-monk.
“There is something not quite right in this city. The nobles of the viceroy’s inner circle are in an uproar over an item which has recently been rumored to have been brought into the city. It is another ring, they say a minor one, Zyrixion, but it still holds some power and it is not ruled by the one ring, nay, this one was forged by another hand,” Ray informed him.
“What power does it give the wearer?” asked Zyrixion, now less sleepy and somberly intrigued by the news of the city’s possible intrigue.
“We’re not sure yet but we think it grants the wearer powers of permanent persuasion. The rumor goes that the individual who possesses the ring entered the city wearing a black overcoat with a cowl, but he has most likely changed into something less obvious. He was forseen vaguely be the court seer, for a shroud of secrecy surrounds this man . Many people wear rings Zyrixion, so we can’t just check everyone who’s wearing a ring, unfortunately, but I want you to go to the taverns, inns, and such to look for an individual wearing a ring inscripted with a magical sigil, and find out what this man is up to.”
“Okay Ray, I’ll set out in the morn.”
“Get some sleep, you’ll need to be well rested to have all your powers of alertness for the morrow,” Ray advised, knowing that Zyrixion had a tendency to stay up late and study or go out to the taverns and play a local game played with visionary cards.
Zyrixion woke up early and dressed as an average merchant type, his disguise when concealing his monk/bard abilities. Zyrixion first headed out to the main city inn, ‘The Plane of Comfort’ to check the meal room for breakfast eaters. He sat at a table and ordered eggs and bacon with some local bread variation. Zyrixion listened carefully to the conversations of others around him, trying to detect the presence of the outsider with the ring, the Mysterious One, as Ray had referred to him before he left the halls. But Zyrixion could only pick up phrases here or there as the noise of the myriad conversations was distracting. After a half hour a stranger entered and sat down at a common table and started up a conversation. Zyrixion couldn’t make out too much of the conversation, but he did hear one thing clearly at the end, a suggestive and affirmative command, “You will do as I asked.”
Could this just be some villager hiring a local laborer to do some work, or could he be the Mysterious One? Zyrixion turned and got a stealthy good look at the man who was dressed, he guessed, as a man from the village of Eridor.
Zyrixion finished his breakfast and returned to the Fellowship halls to make a sketch of the man using one of his many artistic skills. Later that evening, Zyrixion decided to look in the tavern he most frequented for the man to see if he really could be the Mysterious One. Zyrixion was sitting at a table shuffling the visionary cards to play the solitaire version of the game, when the man entered, walked right over to Zyrixion’s table, and sat down.
“Care to play a game of Ishtari?”, the man asked, kindly smiling.
“Sure, but do you play for money?”
“Not always... sometimes just for fun. This game will be for fun,” the man informed him.
Zyrixion shuffled the cards and dealt them out, while the man figeted with his hands below the table.
“I have to say since this is a friendly game that I got a decent hand,” stated the man earnestly.
“Me too,” said Zyrixion, equally earnest, but filled with doubt about the man.
They played their cards in their respective positions that the game called for, while thoughts nervously raced through Zyrixion’s mind, and then the man broke the silence ominously saying, “Ever heard of the darklings?”, in a magically-suggestive voice. In the back of Zyrixion’s mind where he retained his mental core, he knew he had found the Mysterious One, but was relatively helpless against the power of his ring.

To be continued later...

Ray:

I'm holding off on the Altarian Awards website until I find out what we're going to do (Hall of Fame, Award Winners, etc.). When we get a final decision, I'll knock out something and host it on our website.

Man, dropped out of the Top 100 again! I don't submit a game in a couple of days and look what happens! ;p

By the way, Miles...excellent story! I'm looking forward to the next installment!

"By the way, Miles...excellent story! I'm looking forward to the next installment!"

Thanks, it's good to know people actually enjoy what I write. I'm not going for any awards or wanting to compete with other writers because there are so many better writers than me out there. I'm just doing my part with my meager college educated (basic) literary skills to entertain the Fellowship (and any other visitors) as much as I can. ;)

When I write I never have a plan or outline, so I'll have to figure out myself where this story is going. :notsure:
:D

Very nice Miles. When I write, I have a backbone to the story. The general direction the piece is going to take and several key characters that should be developed. That's really all you ever need to write a good story.

Guys, have you looked at the new Fellowship website? I'm looking for any comments you have (besides "The Strategy page isn't working!"...I haven't gotten around to that one, yet!)

It's at http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv/

Comments/Suggestions?

That's great Barry. Some unsuspecting soul might think it's about the books.

There are quite a few good background stories in there. The color is definitely better, and the pictures are good. I'll reserve a more thorough review for when the strat page comes up. Kind of makes me want to revisit some of my old web page designs.

Btw, who is responsible for the European Alliance page? And they have a page!!!?
Thanks, Gengsta. I'll probably need some input for the strat page from any of you who want to submit (not just Fellowship!).

I don't know who does the EA page...I just added their page for completeness! LOL

Actually, I need to add the link to the Orion Sector's Guide and I think Apolyton has a site. I'll try to do that as soon as I can.

I'm on serious overtime...I'm getting the hell out of here!

It's a big improvement over the last one; I particularly like the pic of the wizard of the front page. If I had one negative thing to say it would be that it needs more contrast; I mean the links and the page header image need to stand out from the back ground. Oh, one more thing: the popups are annoying: might scare someone off.

The strategy link takes me to the angelfire website, is that intended? It Says "we couldn't find the page you requested".

I liked the history section; it's nice to have the Fellowship in a context of previous empires.

On the player roster/bio page my character class is not separated from my RPG bio. Also, you may want to list me as "monk/bard" since I am two levels monk and four levels bard as I originally stated. I know my bio seems to suggest that I am only a bard now but I still retain my monk skills. Well 'nough said.

Overall grade: A-

:CONGRAT:

Just needs a few minor tweaks. :)
