BootSkins - yet another thread....

BootSkins - yet another thread....

"Ideally a bootskin should be not just a 16 colour picture...but either include a progress bar or at least 'relate to the boot process'.
Also the images need to be your own to use or have consent included."

Just something that's been sent out when 'rejecting' BootSkin submissions.

As with Wallpapers and Logons, a degree of moderation is required to limit what would otherwise be a sea, nay, flood of wallpaper images simply converted to 4 bit [16 colour] and 640x480 resolution.....something that really is well within the capabilities of most people who have reached the stage of wanting to alter their boot experience.

The 'skinning' process SHOULD be more than that...it should actually require creative input to achieve a result.

Let's try to concede that BootSkins in particular make a good first easy step into 'skinning' but not expect that a simple image conversion is sufficient to be accepted...

I developed BootSkin to change the boot screen. Nothing more, nothing less. Not to be shown in the Louvre.

I think anyone creative enough to design their own 4 bit boot screen(e.g. not just converting down a wallpaper) should be accepted. Progress bars are nice, but not required.

VESA version coming soon, as soon as I'm off of DesktopX again I'll be coding the progress bar support, making sure all of the compatibility tests work, and releasing a private build.

Ian....

Without a progress bar a 'bootskin' is a simply an ini file and a low-quality image, and the section becomes spammed with converted wallpapers and a quick ini edit to change a name.

The proggy is better than that, or rather deserves more effort from the 'skin' creators.

Colour and size reduction of someone else's wallpaper without any effort at all to demonstrate the booting sequence with the inclusion of a progress bar ends up as nothing more than a new venue for copyright abuse from those who would simply spam the wall section with the hi-res equivalent instead.

Skinning a proggy 'should' be more than that.....and I think some relevance to an actual 'boot' is important, if not mandatory...
