How can I improve my interenet performance?

Hello. I have had a 256k DSL internet connection for about 6 months now and everything was going great untill about the last month or so. When I first got the DSL, it was very fast at loading web pages and such. I used to get about 30 kb/sec (it's the fastest I can afford) for downloads and now i only get about 20. The computer account that gets used the most is mine, and it seems like it is the slowest on my account. On my other family members accounts, web pages and downloads seem at the normal speed. So finally, here's my questions.

My account has the most programs installed, gets the most use etc... does that have any effect on the internet performance?

If not, what is? How can I fix it?

I know there are cheesy downloadable tools that "BOOST YOUR INTERNET PERFORMANCE BY 10,000%!!!!"......yeah. I don't want to take a risk by downloading one of those for the sake of spyware and such.

Well, any tips on how to get the most of out my modem would be greatly appreciated.

Go into Control Panel/Network Connections and see if your set-up is exactly the same as the others. If it's not, then change it.

Here's a tip:

Download Ad-aware by lavasoft on www.cnet.com (it's free) and run it on your system. It will find all spyware and delete for you dramatically improving your internet cruising speed.

If you are on XP a good tip is to uninstall QOS packet scheduling Be aware also of local contention issues - that 256k may just be a maximum.

Pay a visit to http://www.speedguide.net (speedguide.net). They have generic Registry patches for regular and PPP connections. They just change the MaxMTU and stuff like that, it won't increase it 10,000% but it does help. Plus it's not a 3rd-party program, just a registry change...so it's relatively harmless. They also have the patches to undo any changes just incase. It helped my DSL out, was downloading at ~80kb/sec, went up to ~120kb/sec after the patch. Hope it helps.

Try here as well. http://www.dslreports.com/ Go into their Tools section and run a Tweak Test, a Speed Test and maybe even a Line Packet Loss test.

In the Tweak test, read their recommendations. Use DrTCP to set your own MTU, MaxMTU, TcpReceive Window, Scaling, TTL, etc.

Don't forget to empty your cache file. Windows checks for previously cached pages every time you click on a new page.

In IE, click on Tools on the toolbar, in the middle of the panel is Temporary Internet Files click on the delete button to clear your cache.

Also, Broadband Reports is a good site for broadband issues with speedtests, a tweak forum and forums for users of various ISP's.

http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all

This is a good place to get info. Sometimes ISP techs hang out there too. A few ISP's actually have techs that monitor their respective forums to provide assistance. Browse around the site and also see if they have a forum dedicated to your particular ISP.

I used sir Hus link to speedguide.net and they said my system was optimized for dial-up but that my MTU was set at 576. They suggested I reset it to 1500, and using the free Optimizer App they provided, I did so.
I am happy to say that there was a noticable increase in Web Page loading speeds.
But be sure to follow bordfryr123's suggestion and clear your cache files.

Just tried their modifications myself. Here are the results from ZDNet's broadband speed test:

Your line speed:

2893.6 Kbps

354.6 K bytes/sec

My 512k is really flying!

/me sighs..............              I'd be tickled pink to actually get the full 56k out of my dialup. I surfed so long at 28.8, that would be screamingly fast to me.

Your download speed : 669935 bps, or 669 kbps.
A 81.7 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 13678 bps, or 13 kbps.
Your upstream result was very slow! .. not good

Kona feels sorry for Koa.... Kona WILL NEVER use dial up again ever in his life if he can help it. to addicted to high speed always on internet.

Anybody found the exact link for the tweak yet? Is it the one on speedGuide.net?

I used the tweak at speedguide.com for Windows ME and my speed actually went down 9 or 8 clicks... sitting at 221 Kbps and 27.5 kbps for dl's. but considering I am connected through the USB port maybe that is OK? I guess I can live with it cause it is still better than 56k.

If anyone knows of another program or tweak I can try I am all ears!
