Population over Cap

AKA: How do I kill my citizens?

Okay so I literally left this game for a while bc of this and other stupid mechanics. Please please pleeeaasseee help me? Note: I'm new so I may not be in the know or stuff?

Game: originally vanilla, this past week Gold (all the dlc and expansions), today activated the cheat screen to enable genocides.

Bought via Steam, fully updated.

So uh. My planets routinely run into the ground approval-wise, which I hate (I am a benevolent overly-mushy ruler), and made me just make tons of colony ships (that were upgraded to kill the colonists after like, turn 50 bc not enough colony planets) - but at a certain point I found out my population makes literally no sense.

Somehow, my worlds keep going over their pop cap. This past hour, I used a cheat to kill millions of citizens, because Kona (pop cap=5) had 8.7 people. Wisp got to 8, Iconia got to 16, Altaria (cap=16 rn) was 30.6 at one point when I ignored it for a bit.

What is going on?? What should I do??

Are you using the Benevolent trait "Abundant" that adds 2 to the population of any new colony?  Are you colonizing new planets with fully loaded colony ships?  I usually put only 1 pop on my colony ships and stay away from Abundant until I can handle it.

I just got the v4.0 opt-in.

I always send 1 Pop on a Colony ship. Many times, I'll colonize a planet and will end with a Pop 5! This makes the citizens very unhappy until the Pop dies off and reaches an acceptable population (3 in most cases).

Adding an entertainment center isn't enough. The Morale boosts from an upgraded Capital and that other building you can get (can't remember the name right now) aren't enough to put a dent in that 4- 6% morale rating.

Where's all that population coming from?!

In other news, praise be! The planetary auto-upgrade can be turned off!!! Thank You, Stardock!!!

The only time I've seen this is if I have the Benevolent trait I mentioned above, or I've gotten a colony ship that I did not build and populate myself, like the free one you can get from Benevolent.  I'm also on the 4.0 opt-in, and I'm most of the way through my second game with it, so I've colonized plenty of planets.

I do sometimes get population over capacity after I invade a planet.  I figure the Civ I took it over from had some trait or tech that increased the pop cap for them but not me.

No, I have not used those Benevolent ships or gotten the Abundant trait. But regardless, that doesn't explain they behavior - they *grow* over the cap. Altaria is where I started, it gets no colony ships at all, and the pop got to 30 out of 16. I've had t kill Kona citizens off more than once in the last 10 turns, because they just breed like crazy.

Besides, for some reason colony ships are now 3 citizens max (after the dlcs) instead of the original 6.

None of the above applies to my situation.

  • No special traits for extra population on the colony ships
  • Not invading other Civ's planets
  • No free Colony ships

This was happening in v3.96, too. This isn't new to v4.0. I'm running Retribution.

My only recourse is to wait it out until the extra population "dies" off. I simply build infrastructure as usual.

If you have a savegame where this is reproducible it would help a lot if you uploaded it to a cloud service (DropBox, Google Drive, One Drive) and post a link here, the developers can take a look at it.

Savegames are located in \Documents\My Games\GC3\Saves or \Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade\Saves

I just checked my saves and none of them currently have what you are looking for.

I am colonizing a lot of planets at the moment and I'm sure the over Pop problem will happen again soon. Of course, now that the doctor is in the house, everything will probably be just fine  :-/

I will send you a game save when that next happens,

Richard

Kona and Iconia are not Altarian planets.

This never ever happens in any of most people's games.  I'm sure it is some strange thing, if you can get them a save game.

I spent another three hours playing, colonized another half dozen planets, and of course, all worked as it should-- no problems with over-pop whatsoever.

Damn the bad luck ;-)

Well, they are now. :)

but to his point, if you capture a planet during war, you should expect to have some portion of their population left, and depending on what techs & improvements they had that you now don't, could leave you a planet that has more pop than capacity.

Be really interesting to see two save games where the population was increasing once you had exceeded the planets capacity. Please let the Yor and the other synthentics know, they are extremely interested in this opportunity. ;)

The other ideologies have traits that give a population increase.  So while the planet remains Malevolent, they are within their pop cap range.  If they become Benevolent, then they are over their pop cap.  Robots have planet improvements that increase robot pop cap, if the planet turns into a bunch of carbon based life forms, then they are over the cap.

My complaint with overpopulation is when you gain a level 1 planet, it has 5 population.  You had better build those colony ships fast.

If you want to be evil then you could send an empty colony ship to a planet, load it up to max, launch the ship, destroy the ship.

@Everyone

Thx y'all! rn I'm playing as an off-brand synthetic, so I can't recreate it yet. I will try to do so asap. Where should I post the saves/contact the devs? Also, how do I find the save file to share it?

Yeah well that is literally what I had to do for a few games. Super frustrating cuz it costs time and construction points, so my simultanious wars were that tiny bit harder to engage cleanly.
