Bro do you even trade?

No I don’t I find it so vastly underpowered I never utilize it. While I don’t have a civilization built around trade I hate the fact that the monetary outcomes are so abysmally low that even in the start of the game it simply isn’t worth building trade ships. I feel trade should be buffed to the point from where the only factor it pertains to is relationships into a viable way to make a small but noticeable amount of coin.

I would be curious to hear other players experinces on this topic.

Oh man I just realized this form doesn’t flag spelling errors. Thank you for reading.

Like any income in this game, trade needs time to build up, the longer the route is active the bigger the return. 15+ Trade routes pumping out 20+ cr per turn each adds up. BUT that been said, trade vs any other income, with the current state of the game, is a minimal return. And since the AI are the only ones that really use trade atm, its only hurting them. (I fixed this imbalance in my mod)

simple test:

I built 6 trade routes and by turn 100 I've got maybe 10 total routes (mine and theirs ) for maybe 100GP total coming in

the rest of economy brings in about the same at 50% tax rate at that time except for

TOURISM! which has me in the 1-2k range, depending on map size, etc.

Without tourism, trade would be a useful add.  in the presence of tourism, shouldn't really be a consideration

Trade affects diplomacy, especially if they have a trade route with you, and they declare war on you. It affects how other players see them.

True, trade provides benefits just beyond income.

For a first order game balance what I'd suggest is that tourism revenue be hard capped to be no more than, say 100% of all other income- which would then incentivize adding more trade routes to bump up the tourism revenues.

Additionally, and maybe this is just me, but I think making at least one trade route between civs a prerequisite for any treaties or alliances.

doing a bit of research, while both Nevada and Florida bring in almost $60B each in tourism income their GDP's respectively are $160B and $960B each. Hard to see any government where tourism is 1000% more than the rest of the economy

Yeah, I agree with the op. True, it needs time to build up, and certainly early game the player should not get a huge income easily.

But personally I'd like trade to be somewhat better, tourism otoh somewhat weaker in generating money. As things are now it is not a huge problem for me, but it feels always kinda imbalanced.
