I've decided to ask Stardock for a refund seen as the game is now September 2018 has anyone asked for a refund and has it been pretty smooth?

The game was and still is advertised for 2017 release date and I bought it on the premise that it was coming out in 2017. You have to dig around the forums to find a Dev post that says it's been put back till September 2018. No where does it say on the main site on the news pages that the release date has been pushed back 12 months.
It is still advertising 2017 release date and buyers will probably make a payment based on this knowing that at least in the next few months the game will be ready or at least beta.
The money I paid for this which was a gift can be better spent on something else I can play now. If people are happy to pay this far in advance so be it but while I don't mind supporting the game because I will eventually buy it I'm not prepared to pay 12 months upfront and september 2018 could got into 2019.
They need to change the news feed for this game to reflect the release date.

It was also in the news feed linked to the origins page. There is limited news posts about the game but this one points to a 2017 release date posted in 2016. Unless you go trawling through the forums posts you see one that says the game has been put back to late 2018. So people will assume it's on track for 2017. you need to remove these posts and perhaps update the companies online that are also still suggesting this game it going for a 2017 release date.

Got a reply from them. Seems their policy for pre-orders is not to refund you. They can keep the game on hold forever and never return any money you've paid.
The game is advertised all over the internet for a 4th quarter 2017 release date even on a recent Stardock news feed in september 2016 when you type in the game it is one of the first places it takes you to the stardock news site.
There needs to be more clarity from the company that the game is still at least a year away from any kind of finished product and that is a rough guess at best looking at the forum post I read. Buyers will come in expecting a 2017 release date and purchase on that reason. Even when you type in the game all over the internet they have said it's a end 2017 release date so they must have got the information from somewhere.
I've done pre-orders loads of times and while there has been delays on a release date usually a couple of months I've never paid for a game 12+ months ahead of it's time. The fact the company has "drastically" changed the date of the "possibly" finished product then it should automatically trigger refunds to those that want them.
What I want to know is why there is loads of information penned for end 2017 release date to all of a sudden 2018 release date it's not like they are saying its going to be like early 2018 because of some set back to finish off they have delayed for 12+ months. Sounds like they haven't really even started making the game yet (just a small sample video) to reel people in.

As for dates, the original release date for the game was actually November 2017 to go with the 25th anniversary of Star Control 2.
Games do get delayed and much of that delay has to do with the two particular design changes:
1. We decided to let players design their own ships rather than rely strictly on the ones we make.
2. We decided to let players craft their own planets and share them rather than relying strictly on procedural generation.
Games get delayed. If you really want a refund go ahead and contact email@example.com and they should be able to take care of you.
There have been monthly vault updates showing the progress of development and we plan on a public Super Melee beta this Fall.
