I actually don't mind the sets so much as every anecdote seems to be about our current time here on Earth. I am totally fine with them saving budget by setting things in a relatively cheaper setting, that makes sense. But that hardly seems necessary when you are just talking about things from the past.

It could be that they mention other time periods more often and I'm just ultra zoned in on their mentions of our current period now. But I don't think so. And the show just isn't good enough to watch again to find out, lol.

Ohmigosh, The Orville tonight was hilarious!    It's Season 1, Episode 9, "It's All Your Fault".   But you have to watch the very first episode to appreciate it (Season 1, Episode 1).

I've been enjoying it so far now.

They built Isaac's character pretty well last week.  Then again, they built the doctor's character well last week, too, as a strong woman, but then this week she's giving whole new meaning to, "sleeping with a slimeball".

I think it makes more sense for an obese actor to play the part of an anthropomorphic robot.  Actually, I'd like to see more obese actors cast in general.   You've got so many aliens--make their species more heavy-set.  If they're a bit TOO human-like, though, I get it:  they need to be sexy.  

Or in Wally.  I was thinking more for the robot and alien roles.  For the human parts, I don't care about realistic.  I expect shallow, walking human viagra for all the actresses.  This may be a show for nerds, but we're still nerds with pheromones.

I didn't realize the season was over. I actually ended up liking it as the season progressed.

Glad they have another season coming.

Me too. But it needs work. It needs to be funnier or more serious... its really having a hard time finding its balance in my opinion. If its going to be more humorous... than it needs to be more a parody... not Family Guy/etc. as people have mentioned.

Basically... if it could be more "Red Shirts" or "Galaxy Quest" I think it could be marvelous comedy... but it is probably too late to go that route, and it seems clear to me that Seth wants to bring back "good ol next-gen Star Trek" complete with its moral messaging... which I full endorse.

So in the end, I think they need to make the show's writing a bit more serious... that doesn't mean "unfunny" but it means a subtler sense of humor. I've been re-watching TNG and there is literally dozens of very quiet moments of humor, that work, because they've developed the characters. Hopefully a second season will give the characters enough interaction and life that they can then focus on their relationships bringing meaning and humor, instead of JUST random dick/fart/egg jokes.
