Crusade Opt-In - A Problem and A Question

Problem
When my survey ship explores a Capsule and I get a research bonus, it is normal for the report to look like this.

The Problem occurs when sometimes the report looks like this, with the research information missing.

I have not noticed a pattern of why it happens one way or the other.  Every time I remembered to check when the research information was missing, the actual research was not being added the to research progress.

Question
In the Civilization Builder in the Traits & Abilities section there is an area about starting ships.  It is labeled "Starting Ships" (plural) and the sentence below it starts "Choose what ships ..." (plural).  Below the sentence is "Choose One" (singular).  Shouldn't the two instances where the plural ships is used be singular?

I haven't see the missing tech bonus.  We'll look into it.

Edit: the answer to your question, you can start with one survey or colony ship, or multiple constructor, scouts, or furies. The label could be worded better

I get this half the time I find a capsule with a tech boost. It seems to still give a bonus to your current research, but it doesn't seem to be 15%.

Oh interesting, I don't even get a pop up notification, I just get it added to the sidebar on the left

I don't get the pop up either and I am kind of missing them. I have to mouse over the info on surveys posted in the upper left screen.

I get the popups when the ship is on manual control.  I don't get them when it is automated.

I've been using manual control, seeing the pop-ups, and just assuming that "leaps and bounds" meant some unspecified amount, different than 15%. But I have to admit I've never checked that it actually gave me research points.

To help show what is happening I recorded some of the game I'm playing when I surveyed two capsules.  This is a new game I started today after Hotfix #1.  I happened to get the pop up without the research information both times.  I used the cursor to indicate what I was examining to show what was and wasn't happening.  I did find out that the research is being applied the next turn instead of as soon as was in the version before Crusade.  There may still be a problem, because the research amount seemed to increase in two large increments the second time.  You can get the video here.
