Beginner question on map area

Hi,

Sorry if this is a dump question!

But are you supposed to be able to unveil the whole map area or is it shaped like a hexagonal ?

I ask because I have two different ship designs, one which has more range than the other but both cannot exceed the dotted map line.

Yes, the maps are hexagonal in shape. No ships will be able to go past the doted edge of the map's limit regardless of their range. Your ships only unveil what they discover as they travel around the map, if none of your ships have traveled there yet, you won't see what's there. Hope that helps clear up some things.
