After 1.9 update all Terran Ships have missing or "miss fitted" textures....

Guess I should have posted this here but the game was fine at 1.8, ships sometimes stuttered and some areas were missed during exploration but it wasn't too bad. Since going to 1.9 I noticed the game play was smoother but I am having texture issues with some of the races, most noticeably the Terrans.

Textures seem to "not fit" or some times go missing to a black void. The "fit" seems to change as I switch from one ship set to another in the custom race appearance tab. Sometimes the lines look like they are in the wrong spots, when I switch out and back I get an almost heart shape on the saucer of the scout, out and back again and there are faint circles all over the ship. Colours don't always seem to match.

The Drengen and I think Yor ships do the same but it isn't as noticeable , the Earth Alliance and Raider ships and components seem completely unaffected.

I tried validating, reinstalling, deleting all custom ships and defaulting my Documents/My Games/GalCiv3 folder with no change. Even boosted my virtual memory and put my PC in performance power setting. Played with the values for maximumtextureatlasresolution in the settings file.

Also when I play as Terran when I zoom in to a ship the spinning symbol disappears and is replaced with a square pallet of what seems to be ship symbols for the map. When using other races and templates this pallet appears only for a moment then disappears leaving me with just the ship on my screen.

Any one else having this issue? Can I get 1.8 back? Steam seems to not want to let me keep my game un-updated.

Screenshots would help immensively in showing the problem.

The Issue

This picture shows the issue with the "spinny image thingy" it is hard to see the issue with the ship texture but if you zoom in you will see faint circles in odd places, it doesn't look like it "fits" the model. Sometimes it will be dark and patchy, others it will show a large almost heart shapped "secondary" colour on the saucer of this particular ship model.

If I go into parts and use terran parts the issue ranges in severity. Yor and Drengen ships and parts have the same issue to a lesser extent. All the other textures seem fine.

Using other races if I zoom in the "many spinning symbols" appears only for a second then it disappears, going to what I can only assume is normal.

No issues until 1.9.

I have same issue after 1.9 update. My screen looks exactly the same and when you select the ship, all of those artifacts rotate.

Well, I found a solution, it ain't pretty and it is kinda sketchy but....
If you happen to obtain a copy of the GFX file from version 1.7 or 1.8 you can copy and paste it into the 1.9 GFX file, overwrite any conflicting files. When you play the game now the textures and ships look as they did, you loose the spinny symbol over your ships when zoomed out but I never liked that anyway. Now, there might be a better way; I noticed the GFX file was somewhere around 2Gb from 1.9 but the older one had almost 5Gb of texture data. Maybe just adding the "extra" will fix the issue. I might try that but right now I am happy so... meh.

That's a good fix. After testing a little more, only 3 files needed to be copied from 1.8 GFX to fix my issue:

  • Selection_Main.dds
  • Selection_Main_Ticks_Large.dds
  • Selection_Main_Ticks_Small.dds

(Yours could be different)

It's odd that more systems don't have this glitch.

I needed them all, I tried just those files and it fixed the cursor swirly symbols but my textures were still off. I suspect that the 1.9 textures are too hard to load for my GPU or when they did the 1.9 update they didn't include "low enough" low res textures.

Funny side effect however, when I had just 1.8x I could not see; nebula's, black holes, explosions, kinetic rounds, the light at the end of the missile. A few other things I suspect.... Anyway it is like a whole new game now lol; since I did this "fix" I can see all that stuff.

You're right, the whole game looks MUCH better by replacing all 1.9 GFX files with 1.8.

Might not need the files with "_Lean" in the name because that option is disabled in 1.9 (not that it really hurts anything to leave them).

The graphics glitches should be resolved now.  Please let us know if you are still having trouble:

The rotating rings are fixed but the textures are still misaligned.
