When I create any custom designed ships (in the Designer mode) they have NO icon on the construction screen or on the map -- this makes them pretty much unusable because they are invisible? Does anyone else have this problem?

In one of the earlier game versions of Galciv3 i did frequently have custom ship designs vanish..... i think only after saving and reloading tho? So i would design a ship, it shows up in the list, i save the game, go to bed, next day reload, go to try to build that ship, its gone!!?? Never happens if i have built at least one of them tho.... oh but ones under construction don't stop the design vanishing, and then if i have the repeat construction on, it keeps building the ship with the vanished design, but if i halt the production and try to restart, i cannot, the design is not there! Funny.
i have not seen any designs vanish since 1.8 patch tho.
Sometimes there is a lag generating the Thumbnail for a ship when it is designed, this can be made worse if you have a extremely large number of custom ships. "250+". You might be able to open the designs and re save them, and cause them to re-generate.
If you are seeing no Tactical Icon, that is a bigger issue.
