Altarian Resistance Goes to War with me for no apparent reason.

Can anyone explain why a race that is "close" to my race would all of a sudden go to war with me?  I didn't attack them.  We were miles apart and all of a sudden, I'm at war.  As you can see from the screen shot below, it's very odd.  This is not the first time that this particular race has done this to me in a different game.  They do not tell me ahead of time that we're going to war, if I hadn't been monitoring the diplomacy screen every turn, I wouldn't have even know we were at war.  They finally never attack me and I never attack them and then they want to call it quits after a few turns.

Actually, not only should they not be at War with you, they shouldn't have a Close relationship with you it seems to me.

Trading with their enemies, trading with an infidel, concerned about your military buildup. Suddenly I'd be looking at my Close partner and gently asking WTF...

I think the values for those diplomatic situations are a bit out of whack ie trading with an enemy drops you down a level or two (I assume they asked you not to and you refused or you started trading with whoever that race is knowing they were enemies of the Alterian Resistance?)

And giving a (ie singular) gift in some situations shouldn't get you a nice green plus, just a "okay, we'll postpone the war for a week" response.

Altarisns are bad about that . I think it has something to do with the fact that they seem to come begging for tech/credits all the time putting the other "we rush buy'd/built an astroid with the last 500bc you gave us so have fallen on hard times, can you help" races to shame for being so self sufficient.

Can the AI pay each other to go to war? I guess not with the Altarians unless they picked malevolent for some reason... I think it's only malevolent we can buy off right?

In Galciv2 I remember people used to complain the AI never goes to war with them! lol, because if it is hinged too strictly on simple diplomatic factors then that is what happens, but i am glad they fixed that problem in Galciv3

The bit about being "Close" aside, one of the things to remember about the Altarians is that they're pretty damn militaristic.  Their AI personality has "Military" as the third priority with "Fortification" and "Expansion" being fourth and fifth.  Ironically, "Diplomacy" is next to last at eighth. Combine that with the "Xenophobic" character trait and I can see them being twitchy if something sets them off.

What set them off this time?  Who knows.  Could be as simple as the RNG God deciding that they got miffed over something you did and decided you needed to be taught a lesson.  Altarians can be fairly dogmatic that way if one believes the lore.

yea, the problem with it is tyei so generally doesn't give a fig even though their behavior from a human would cause insane declaration of war.

That's about it.  I play super Benevolent and most of the time they love me, but if they think I am not strong enough to defend Benevolentism on my own, they step right in.
