why are my (synthtic) people so unhappy?

I took a break around 1.3/1.4ish & came back more recently.  Before & still I mostly play the yor & other synthetic races, but my people seem ridiculously unhappy & need supportive pop+multiple morale improving starbases to avoid smashing productivity now.  given that the ai all seem to research supportive pop as well even though they used to vary there, I'm guessing it's affecting them too.morale always seems to be things like x/13 = sad with x changing from time to time ... what's the x based on & how do I fix it in the xml's?

Are you setting your global production slider too aggressively? Coercion has quite a big unhappiness penalty now. Having said that I generally only find morale to be an issue very early game, once every planet has a happiness starbase, and every planet 1-2 happiness buildings you can support huge populations without any issues arising with happiness even with a 10-15% penalty for some coercion while you rush towards a tech victory or whatever.

that;s what I originally thoughtm so I started making sure it was never more than the 13/44/44(?) that gave no penalty. but when that made no change across multiple hundred+ turn games I started trying just always leaving it 33/33/33. GlobalInterColonyMods (the old lep) is a flat 0, so shouldn't matter there either

x = total Morale for the planet.  Approval = Morale / Population.  If you hover your mouse over the Approval rating for your planet, you can see this.

The higher your pop, the more Morale you need to produce to keep the Yor "happy".  So you need approval buildings and/or starbase modules.  For my Yor, I always get Supportive Population and then usually try to build a malevolent Intimidation Center adjacent to an Entertainment Center.  When pop gets even higher, then another Entertainment Center and especially the Promethion Pleasure Park help a lot.
