Salvage useless

Salvage seems to be a useless attribute beyond the early part of the game.

 

Repair of Titan class spaceships seems to literally take hundreds of turns. I have literally captured a ship, parked it in orbit, sued for peace, had the peace expire and had the ship destroyed when they launched the next attack, all before the ship was half repaired.

 

Is this the result of some game play "balancing" as I remember ships used to self repair reasonably quickly.

I also seem to be outgunned by what should be inferior races.

 

What would be useful would to be able to send a ship to the shipyard for repair. Somehow it seems stupid that I can build a new Titan class warship in 5 turns, but it literally takes hundreds to effect moderate repairs.

Yes, strategic repair makes no sense. It's a small flat amount that doesn't scale with either ship class or health. But you CAN repair ships much faster at a shipyard or starbase. It's still awful at high tech levels, but still much faster.

I tent to agree with this.  When i salvage a ship i typically either decommission it for credits or trade it to a minor/ friendly AI.

How do I repair faster at shipyard/starbase? There doesn't seem to be a selection for it and just parking them there seems to make no difference.

Anything docked in either gets a strategic repair bonus. For starbases it's somewhere around x7 multiplier on the base rate, which again isn't much because the normal repair rate is incredibly slow for anything larger than small ships.

Looking in the XML files, I can't see anything that looks like a x7 multiplier on strategic repair rate for being docked at a starbase or shipyard. Base repair rate appears to be 4 HP/turn, with shipyards and colonies increasing that by 3 HP/turn for stationed ships and starbases increasing that by 5 HP/turn for stationed ships.

You might want to try this mod, which increases the rate at which ships are repaired. I assume it still works for the current version of the game, though I haven't checked to make certain of that; if it doesn't, it should be easy enough to mod the current game files to do the same thing.
