Recommend me some difficulty settings

My first real game I played on normal everything, medium sized galaxy with three opponents. It was really hard and I just survived long enough to build an ascension gate on my homeworld while my borders were being destroyed and taken over. It was epic. I also learned a lot about the game.

My second real game i played on small with three opponents again, this time with better game knowledge and a lucky-ish start regarding planets. By the time I spotted all three other civs I was much more powerful in every way. They seemed cramped and didn't have too many planets each. It wasn't so interesting, not so epic. Unfortunately it took me about 5 hours to notice this.

So how should I adjust the difficultly for my next game? I don't want to get five hours in and have to restart again. What does galaxy difficulty do? What size should I play? I'd prefer the game to not go too long though.

That's just a nice way of saying you don't want to lose ;-)

I would recommend playing on Small/Medium but increasing your opponents to ~12. This makes it more a "knife fight" scenario where things get interesting quickly. Then you'll know sooner if you want to continue on with it.

You can download more races from the steam thingy or Nexus Mods.

If not losing is the problem is the problem then try a easier setting. Losing is part of the game. Below normal you get economic bonuses. Above normal they get economic bonuses. Enjoy learning the game by losing.

1. Leave econ wheel and slider alone.

2. Start on side.

3. Have a faction with many or all negatives.

4. If Dreng. go for influence victory, if Alt for for mil victory, Icon. go for assention. etc

5. Use an ideology worst for your faction.

Probably keep it normal for now, but add a bunch more AI as others have said. You might also want to increase the map size, both to get more AI and to ensure the map has actual dark spots in it to hide surprises.

Thanks for the advice! Think I'll try a normal "knife fight" next.

I started another game before everyone wrote here. I did 3 gifted opponents on a medium map. Two I'm fighting against and winning. The third i want to be friends with because we have same benevolent ideology and role playing reasons but they are running away with the game, so much more powerful than everyone else. And I dont think they want to be friends yet because "You are ripe for conquest ---". When I take over the other two i can probably match them, but I think they'll get a tech victory before then.
