Has anyone made custom ship equipment?

I was looking at replacing some of the ship equipment with custom designs.  There are a number that use the same model and I'd like to have them easier to identify on sight plus making them a bit more interesting in appearance.  However, I can't get the game to recognise new designs in <artdefine>.  In the designer the thumbnail is blank and no part is displayed when I select it.  So I'm wondering if others have got it to work and if I'm just missing something or if it is hardcoded somewhere and can't be changed in the way I want it?

I know you can group ship parts(Ctrl+Left click each part, then select group parts) in the designer, then save the grouped parts as a new ship part, maybe the way to go atm.

What I'm trying to do is replace the model for ship equipment (lasers, hyperdrive, etc) not just add a cosmetic part.

Ship equipment is treated as cosmetic parts by the game, it just defined differently by xml and has an effect applied again by xml. All parts are listed in CosmeticComponentArtDefs.xml (even lasers, hyperdrive, ect). I was just trying to point you at a possible solution. Also they are not under <ArtDefine> but under <ShipComponentArt> instead. (Which you should know already if you did a little investigating).

Not sure why you're getting all snappy.  Anyway, thanks for the help.  The CosmeticComponent xml was what I was missing.

:omg:   Snappiness is not what I was trying to convey :S

Fair enough.  I accept that I've misinterpreted the tone of your reply.

The suspense! Did ya get it working?

Yep.  I just need that extra step of adding the custom part info to the Cosmetic Component XML.  Once that was done the game could actually find the files.

Any chance of a sneak preview? O:)

Sure.  This is the part I was trying to get to appear.  I could get it in the list, but now I have something I can place on a hardpoint.

Snazzy! Looks like a double ended Gunport.

I guess your going to make more?

It's on my list of things to do...which is the same as saying "hopefully".
