Ship's name reverting to generic name on upgrading
If a player renames ships to their own format and then the ships are upgraded , each ships name will then revert to the generic name used by the programme.

it has been this way since the game was released. It is yet another cool feature the game will not let you use.
Evidently it is not ever going to be fixed. Enjoy the angry squirrels and mercenaries.
I don't see what there is to "fix" here.
The base templates cannot be deleted as the game automatically updates those. so you have a ship that is a base name like the Torian Lobster.
You edit the Torian Lobster and rename "Green Killer"
you then upgrade a technology. The game does not modify custom designs. so you now have Lobster L (Upgraded Lobster), and "Green Killer" (Not upgraded)
This is not broken. changing this behavior would break the game.
Now what I would like to see is the ability to Obsolete or hide design and have the design not show back up after it has been upgraded with new technology.
it would also be nice if once we went in and made Green Killer Mrk1 the game would realize that this is an upgrade over Green killer
No.
If I build a ship (say a medium warship) and then research a new weapon and upgrade my existing ship to use the new weapon, then the game *sometimes* loses the ship's name and renames it something else. Since this doesn't happen every time it is clearly a broken feature and not intentional.
If it was intentional they should lose the ability to rename ships since it requires the player to rename the ship every time it is upgraded.
