Is this game dead?

So I picked up this game wanting a more expansive 4X game, and loving the idea of the ship designer. I noticed this 'metaverse' thing on the main menu and saw "total ranked wins" and the other stats.

I really like playing ranked multiplayer pvp (played a lot of games like LoL Smite Hearthstone CSGO etc.), so I was very disappointed to go on the multiplayer page multiple times, and find that it's totally barren! In fact I only found 1 game once, with 1 person in it.

So basically my question is, is this game completely dead? I feel like I have wasted my money a bit, as playing only vs the AI and one of my friends is a little bit unfulfilling.

The Metaverse stuff was doing maintenance last week and they possibly wiped/lost some information.     Metaverse is also a new feature that was added in patch 1.6 so it has only been running for a few weeks.

the game is definitely not dead.

Is there an explanation as to why the multiplayer list is always empty (apart from that 1 time there was a game with nobody in it)?

Did you buy the game via Steam or GOG?        GOG can't see the Steam people and vice versa     I've never seen the lobby be totally empty.

Very few people play multiplayer. However the game is far from dead, it received a patch and an expansion a few weeks ago.

There's essentially no MP scene. Apparently only about 1% of players have ever even clicked the button for it, or some similarly minuscule number. Also, the basic balance of the game is pretty weak, with some races and strategies being vastly more powerful than others, so there's little incentive to produce a competitive MP community.

Multiplayer is not dead, just most games take hours/days to play from beginning to end so therefore it takes a commitment to play a game from beginning to end.  I have a few people that get together on Sunday and Tuesday evenings and play.  See forum post https://forums.galciv3.com/474942/page/1/#3619106

Aside from that the multiplayer portion of the game has been buggy to this point and is in need for additional love.  Stardock has been very good fixing issues with their game and I suspect this will be taken care of in the near future.  This may be another reason why the lobby is baron.

The last reason is some players are playing on different versions of the game.  Many founders are playing on the opt-in beta 1.61 although open to everyone.  Other players that haven't opted in are on 1.6.

Either way if you wish to join my MP group feel free to look me up on Steam (same name as here) and give me a shout tomorrow night.  Thanks

In the context of GalCiv3 ranked wins and losses refer to single and multi player games where cheats were not used. We do offer ranked multiplayer for other games (Ashes of the Singularity and Offworld Trading Company) but there hasn't been sufficient interest in this for GalCiv3. Turn times can get very long so many folks don't play. There are people who schedule meetups to play via the Steam forums as well as here in our forums.

Bought from steam (though I should have got it from GOG because it would probably be cheaper)

I've asked for the introduction of a turn timer which may help with this, plus bring back the beep beep when it's your turn.

Another suggestion would be to have a mini game of some sort to do while your waiting for your turn to come up but, that would be more involved.

That's what smart phones are for!

Me, I groove out to tunes.  I have the game silenced, so I wouldn't even hear the beep beep it's my turn.  :)

Also, I have played LAN Civ 5 with an OCD micromanager in my family.  Those are long turn times!
