Upgrade prices

Why are the upgrade prices so high?

why does it cost like 3500 BC to upgrade a ship worth 700BC

If you ask the up upgrade price should be based on the components being upgraded. the 3500 cost could be used to be change the ship into a totally different one

I don't know the exact forumla (but figuring it out shouldn't be too difficult). I assume it sorta Works in the same way it did in Gal Civ 2, in that if you upgrade a ship but you don't replace any components (only adding new ones) then you only have to "pay" for the new ones. This tends to be affordable most of the time.

On the other hand, if you upgrade a ship from scratch, say you just got newly researched weapons and armor, then the upgrade will be substatially more expensive, as you have to pay for every single new component, basicly "Rushing" the ship from a shipyard per se.

Also, if the "Cost" of a component/ship translated into a 1:1 "Rush" deal, there would be barely any incentive to actually manufacture ships, other than the hulls themselves (which you could then upgrade).

I agree that it does often cost very much to upgrade ships. Perhaps the devs could take another look at the formulas for this? Or perhaps this has been deeply considered and upgrades are prices fairly?

It literally just multiplies the cost by a factor set in global defs. The same factor is also used for Rush buying. I think it's 10; was last time I looked. I think that upgrades do only switch the changed components, but the price is so high that it becomes insanely expensive anyway.

It's a hangover from when money was stupidly easy to acquire, and can probably be reduced a fair bit now. Though truth be told, the game's economic balance remains an absolute mess, and will likely be even more so for a few patches after 'coercion' is added.

Id like a two tier system where we pay 'through the nose' to do in field repairs or upgrades. This would be as it is now if OUT of your Empires influence and if you are in then cost is 1/2.

If you are docked at a starbase then the price is cut down the no multiplier, you pay base costs. Also if you are docked at a Military starbase your repairs and upgrades are 'next turn' in addition to huge cost savings.

Just my wish list mod. Id really like to see more use for Military SB and this would help.

This gives me a brilliant idea!

Upgrade costs much cheaper docked at a shipyard is a much better idea!

You can have an option to put the ship back into production basically, and then rush buy the upgrade or let it upgrade via production over a number of turns.

Obviously it only works when there is no ship already under construction, and you can only upgrade one ship cheaply per turn! Thus you will limit the ability to exploit this, but also make shipyards at low production planets much more useful.

Also it is not really realistic to be able to upgrade the 'expensive way' in outer space. You should only be allowed to upgrade a ship if docked at a starbase, shipyard or planet. Also you can upgrade any ship in a fleet if a ship in the fleet has a constructor pod (not consuming the pod tho).

Totally agree. Being able to upgrade a ship while it is outside of a starbase, shipyard, or planet makes no sense to me.

Military Starbase? Sure. Great idea.

Shipyard? I may as well just build a new ship rather than bother with upgrading it at a shipyard, despite the fact that it makes sense. The time it takes to send a ship out in the field back to the yard plus upgrade time and cost provides no advantage over simply building a new ship for me, especially with talk of nerfing engine stacking. You may as well decom a ship and use the funds to cover any negative income while you go all out military production. Furthermore, any planet with low military production value should be focused on other things anyway, like making the money or expanding culture.
