RANDOM EVENT THROWS ENTIRE GAME?????

I get notification of an event - there's a bunch of new super planets.   I look for them and GUESS WHAT?   One faction HAS THREE OF THEM RIGHT IN HIS HOME SYSTEM.

There are none anywhere else that I've found.

I quit the Galactic Council, or whatever it's called, colonize the planet.   That lasts about two turns.

So.... I'm two hundred turns or so into my first game and the entire game is blown by a RANDOM EVENT?    SERIOUSLY?????

Yep. That is the joy of random events. You can turn them off if you want.

So is this 'Another Faction just won the Irish Sweepstakes and you're screwed' a 'Galactic Event' or a 'Mega Event'?

And apparently you can't turn them off in Quick Start games.

Quick start games usually have the same settings as your previous games

The question becomes "Is three planets, even great ones, enough to guarantee a win or otherwise change the outcome of the game?"  I don't think it is.  I think the event, as it worked out this time, makes that faction a tempting target for invasion, really.  This illustrates that there are different reactions available from different players.   Therefore, unless it can be shown that it actually breaks the game over and over, I am not ready to accept OP impression of the event as a game breaking design.  A frustrating break, certainly, but not broken.

The game is hardly blown by an AI opponent getting 3 good planets in it's territory.  It might make that AI opponent a little more powerful if they actually utilize those planets well, but it certainly won't make them invincible.  And odds are, it won't even make very good use of those planets for a long time anyways.  Your actions of leaving the UP just to attempt colonizing one of those worlds actually damaged yourself far far far worse than the AI getting those planets ever could have.

If you play with Mega Events, expect them to completely f*&& with things.  Galciv 1 had all kinds of bizzaro mega-events that were just part of the game, and they routinely turned the universe upside down.  If they are not to your taste, turn them off.

Mmmmmm. I understand your frustration. I usually throw a screaming tantrum - um, make that, I 'express my entirely-justified dis-satisfaction' when I get the event that slows all the ships down. But, really, the AI isn't (yet) smart enough for additional planets to make any difference. Even if you are playing at a high level of difficulty where it is getting a lot of free resources, the planets don't matter. It's just more targets for your space marines... and you DO know how to put those super-worlds to work.

My least-favorite event is the one that bestows lots of new resources. Unless you shut them off completely (and I get some anti-matter then ANYWAY) there are so many resources floating around that every citizen can have his or her own durantium mine. More... is definitely not needed.

There are so few habitable planets here... so few.   To get three planets like this, yeah, it derails the game, especially on a small map.

I don't mind ships being slowed down, research boost, whatever wacky stuff happens.   But three mega planets in one home system?    On a small map where all the planets are colonized?   No, that's crazy.

Good to know the quick game uses your previous settings.

Oh well, this was a learning game anyway.

If you want to play a normal game, then just turn them off. I only put mega events on one game in maybe a hundred, simply because they're pretty much designed to throw the whole game wildly off-course and drastically screw up the balance of power. The civ-equivalent would be something like global warming or an alien invasion. It's something to keep things interesting for veteran players rather than being a real part of the game, imo.
