Any way to make Dreadlords stronger? They seem pretty wimpy

I paid for the dread lords to return but all to often they get taken out by a single Ai. In galciv 2, you really had to make an alliance to fight them. I liked this and felt like it changed the dynamics to more of a fight together vs die alone tension. Please tell me how to get this feeling back or how to make the dread lords stronger? I really appreciate the content and really want to just increase the power of these events.

The Dread lords event is a fun one. The idea is to eliminate them as fast as possible when the event shows up. If they do not get taken out, they can and will quickly crush everyone around them.

Any examples of games where they became a threat? I wish I could make them stronger myself.
