Oops... I won.

This is definitely a RTFM moment, but I was enjoying my game, bein' chummy with everyone, got everyone to ally with me, and BAM! YOU WIN!

That was easy...

I'll probably never play a diplomacy faction again without turning off diplomatic victory.

On the other hand, I plan for my next game to be on a MUCH larger map size (was playing on Small), with habitable planets set to scarce, and pirates as high as they go. I want to struggle to get anywhere in this rough-and-tumble galaxy, and by the time I meet the other players I want us all to be cynical, battle-hardened peoples that would just assume shoot first and ask questions never.

Anyone else have a moment like this?

This happens to me when I forget to turn off Influence victory :D

Yep, after I get the achievement for a given victory type, I usually turn it off until only Domination is left.  There is can be no other ending to the story of my empire!

That said, I tend to be fairly uncompromising in diplomacy, so I leave Allied victory on: anyone willing to buddy up with me and stay by my side throughout is welcome to become a thrall race in my galaxy.

Does it happen naturally, even if you don't bother with influence buildings?

If all the planets are colonized, and you start conquering the galaxy, you will win an influence victory before the last opponent falls.

Yep.

Not sure if this is still the case, but it used to be that you couldn't win the influence victory if you were at war. That way if you are actively conquering the galaxy you shouldn't be interrupted by the influence victory.

I haven't won with influence in ages as i tend to turn that off. But does it give some sort of dramatic notification countdown the turns leading upto victory to at least get you hyped for the win or is does it just randomly out of the blue go, 'You Win!"?

No idea. Diplo' was out of the blue, but in hindsight that should have been an obvious win con'. I kind of thought, with the United Planets, that I had to be elected ruler similar to MOO2, and couldn't just win an allied victory. Hell, I would think that all my allies would have to be allied to get such a win, but I know for a fact some of them hated each other.

That's why you RTFM.

Also, is the starbase spam real for everyone, or just me? I feel like you just get to a point where every planet needs three to four economic starbases, and you have to mine everything. I realize I could just build a fleet and kill people, but when no one's trying to fight you, you build econ', right?

Unless you are tracking it on victory conditions, there are no warnings. It would be nice if it let you know when you hit the threshold and enter the "hold it for 10 turns" phase. It would also be nice if any Civ with whom you don't have excellent relations would start going after you as you approached it.

i think brad said in one of the interviews during beta something to the effect of

starbase spam was a real annoyance in gcII and i think weve hit that nail right on the head

I still dont understand why that was a goal

I should possibly be a tad clearer. I had nothing better to do than churn out constructors. I didn't have military tech' yet, no AI were around, or, if they were, they were all too content to sit back and let me do whatever I pleased in whatever wasn't their side of the galaxy. Next thing I know, I'm mining everything that isn't already claimed (did the AI start claiming things like mad when it saw me doing it?), and putting up economic starbases just due to the sheer excess of constructors I'm churning out (I was getting one a turn by this point).

Then again, this was on Normal with a diplo'-oriented civ'. Higher difficulties and a faction that doesn't turn the AI into my pet dog might rectify that. I think I remember diplo' civ's having this problem in GalCiv2 as well.
