So....

I know we have 1.3 drop and here i my dilemma. Stardock wants us to play WITHOUT planetary specialization and yet the mechanic that is going to replace it is not in. So what we have at this point is somewhere half in and not complete.

I have found that only using JUST the empire wide wheel REALLY slows my game down and I find myself clicking the turn button so I can complete ships. This was very much the case in GCII. I want to specialize, I want to! I want to get that ship built or that research done. I know that we are changing the core mechanic of the game and that is fine. I am happy with the direction. I  just don't want to start a game (knowing) that the features I need to play well are not in (the replacement for planetary specialization/wheel) yet.

Do we have an ETA, on when we are going to completely remove the planetary wheel and get the permanent change?

Thanks!

Yeah, I tried to ignore the planetary wheel, but finally gave in.  We need something to help us manage individual planets and for now, the wheel is our only tool.

Hopefully, it'll be something as good or at least comparable when they change it.

You can play with the wheel. It's a game. Use what's there.

Having played a few 4X games I do think the one step approach to building production is better than a 2 step approach.  In other words, if you build a library in civilization (1 step approach) it is assumed to be fully staffed by librarians and you dont have a slider bar to allocate librarians.  In galciv games, however, you have to not only build the factory, but assign factory workers.  I think the two step approach ultimately just bogs the game down.

It's going in 1.4, I think they've been fairly clear on that.

If you want, I can cobble together a small mod that lets the AI use the planetary wheel properly so you don't thrash it every game. It's actually pretty easy to do - you just define a set of AI governor bonuses with 100% offsets, reference them in the governor defs, and then you're good to go. The AI is frighteningly powerful with them.

Wheel is gone in 1.4, might as well keep using it, rather than trying to play how Stardock "wants" you to play since they haven't put in the planetary focus yet. If you want to try to get used to playing in the mode the game will be in 1.4, I'd just manually limit myself to setting the wheel, say, 20% further in any direction than the global wheel.

Thanks for the replies. My point was Stardock does NOT want us to play with it. I know we are going to migrate to a game without it.

Frogboy, the AI is very much improved by the way. It just feels better right now, both in coordinating attacks and setting up invasions.
