Powerful Pirates in 1.3

Now that the release version of 1.3 is out, I decided to forget the game I had going with the opt-in and start a new game.  I had the pirates on my usual setting of Common.  They were their usual minor nuisance, so I mostly left them alone.  After I built up enough ships with good offense and defense, I went on an extermination spree and eliminated all the pirate ships and bases around me.  I also noticed that the AI races were also taking out the pirate ships and some of the bases near them.  I thought this meant I no longer had to worry about pirates.

I was wrong.

After a Galactic Event caused a burst of anomalies, I was moving my survey ship to get as many as I could.  I was moving it through an area I had already explored, so I wasn't worried about running into anything.  I was surprised when I found a pirate shipyard (it was identified as a "Deep Space Shipyard") out in the void.  I was also surprised by the icon used for a fleet of pirate ships and even more surprised by the stats of the fleet.

Here is a screenshot showing the shipyard and pirate fleet.  Notice the Manufacturing Per Turn for the shipyard is 20.  It was 5 for the shipyards I destroyed earlier.

When I got a report on the fleet and the ships in it, I discovered this.

They are already have Large ships, and I just finished researching Medium.  They aren't building large ships, so I wonder if they appeared when the shipyard did.

This next screenshot shows what I found when I moved my spy ship towards that shipyard.  Before I got there, I found 4 other shipyards.  Some things are labeled in the screenshot, which I will explain after  it.

As I watched the area, I saw the some things happen that indicated to me that the AI is better.

1. The AI fleets labeled 1 and 2 moved down and destroyed the pirate shipyard labeled 6.
2. The pirate fleet labeled 3 moved over and destroyed the starbase labeled 4.
3. The pirate ship labeled 5 moved to the ships labeled 7 to create a fleet that moved towards the starbase labeled 8.

I sent my spy ship elsewhere, so I don't know what else happened in this area.

Do you have the Mega Event DLC?  If so, sounds like you triggered the "Pirate Outbreak" Mega Event.  I had no idea they were THAT nasty though!

I do have it - I have everything.  I didn't know about the "Pirate Outbreak", and I don't remember getting a notification about it during the game.  I wonder if there is something else going on here.  I will be paying more attention from now on.  I didn't mention it before, but the large ships have 4 moves instead of the 2 the other pirate ships have.  Anyone who is careless will soon be missing a ship.

OMG !!!

So did you build a fleet to blast them yet?

Yeah, I figure it's gotta be the new faction of pirates due to not only the beefiness of them but the different icon they have (the standard pirates have the upside down triangle as an icon).

Makes something to look forward to when I eventually get it! :D

I did not go after the pirates.  They weren't bothering me, and I was too cowardly to attack ships that strong.  Also, some of the races were doing a somewhat decent job of attacking them.  I decided to let them work on the pirates while I took care of other problems.

One of the problems I was having was that some of the races were parking too many ships next to my planets, so I decided to take them out.  That hasn't been going too well.  After several wars, some declared by me and some on me, too many of the races have surrendered to the same race.  That race now controls about half the galaxy.  I expect to be swamped before too long.  My only hope is that the Snathi Revenge will help me - that is how bad things are.

While I was in my wars, some of the other races were destroying the pirates.  I have found only one pirate shipyard still existing, and the race in control of the galaxy is moving ships towards it.  These pirates really weren't much of a problem because they didn't build the bigger ships, and they didn't move too far from their shipyards.

The logo the pirates have in this game is due to a change I made based on this post (forums.galciv3.com/467054/).  I thought it would just change the pirates, but it changed any race that uses the upside down triangle for its logo. As a result, a number of the races in my games have the skull logo.  This includes the Spefield Society, which is about the conquer the galaxy in the game I am playing.

Sorry for the confusion.

That is the Mega pirate  event.  I have not seen it yet but from what I'm seeing from your screen shots then I have hope that they will be a deadly challenge. I hope they do not weaken them.
