1.2 AI not challenging at all on gifted.

So I started A game on Gifted with 12 main civs including me. Insane map size, slow tech speed all that jazz. However the AI represent zero challenge. This is an even bigger problem then the worthless moral system when you're over 200 planets owned. At first it is fun, but after about turn 175 I noticed that the AI had completely STOPPED expanding. I mean I have 170 worlds in my empire, and the next closest is like 25 worlds, and each of the other 11 civs is surrounded by literally hundreds of good worlds and it is turn 206. Please fix this or do I just need to up the difficulty?!?!

Upping the difficulty would be a good start.  The devs are working on the AI and it does have a lot of potential.  The improvements in 1.2 are pretty good compared to where they were before.

I play exclusively on godlike (suicidal) and am working on new challenges.  Mainly going for the Steam achievements, but tweaking the game settings helps.  I've only played the insane map size once and have found it to be less of a challenge, even on godlike.  The AI players do well in the beginning of the game, but tend to fall apart later.  The larger the map, the longer they have to lose their teeth and start drooling.

I hope you can have fun with it while they're working to make it better.  Good hunting.

Play with 45 or 50 ai on the next tier up in difficulty and reduced the amount of available planets.

Aren't  most sales of a game in the first couple of months?

So improving the AI to a smaller and smaller audience at somepoint makes no sense.

And if the AI can't handle the base game what happens when you throw in DLC's and all the new toys?

The business model of the game industry is changing. It's more and more towards "build a player base and sell DLC's and expansions". Which is a good things as it gives an incentive to keep on working the game.
