This vs Galciv 2 UE with Community Update

I've played the community update version of Galciv 2 for almost 50 hours now. It's awesome and I've purchased Galciv 3 already. My only question is how the ai compares between these two. Am I better off sticking with the community update for GC2 or go for 3?

Why so?

Both. You're not required to stick to either.

That said, the GC2 AI is not too difficult once you figure out the patterns it has. GC3 AI is already a more interesting game in my opinion. Not necessarily better at this point, but at least more fun to play against.

That's cool. How is that so? Playing the CU on GC2, the AI seems to adapt armor to my weapons but I've heard that isn't the case in 3?

I've been digging through the AI ship-equipping coding for a good while now, and I do not believe it is possible for the AI to adapt to your loadouts in GC3. Perhaps it can choose between the ships it has available to design, to pick the ones with the best defenses vs your weapons, but in that case it is not able to (for instance) react to the player if the player is using medium missile ships.

It was. The AI in GalCiv 3, however, just isn't at that level yet. That's also true for a lot of other areas, like planet specialization, fleet management, diplomacy, and so on. It will get there eventually, but that is going to take some time and effort.

The AI in GC2 tends to be somewhat passive. They will build ships and harass you, but they tend not to launch an aggressive campaign to actually take your worlds. In the many hours i spent playing on higher difficulty, i can count the number of planets the AI swiped from me on one hand.

If you enjoy a long, slow, empire-simulator kind of game, GC2 is just fine. If you want something more aggressive and tense, GC3 already provides a more interesting experience as-is. Again, it isn't more difficult (yet), but it is more interesting.

By a lot of other areas you mean ALL other areas right? Can you name a single area where the AI in GC3 is better than GC2?

GC2 is refined but dated whereas GC3 is abit raw at the moment and the LEP is killing games on the largest maps.

The AI can do this both for offense and defense. Eventually, once Steam Workshop is properly integrated, the AI will start getting access to the thousands of ships that human players make, and will be able to pick from that large pool which will most likely have various "hard counters" in it. Currently however, it is limited as you have alluded to in your post.

A great advantage over GC2 yes IF, and this is a big IF, If the AI can also manage its planets, know where the real threat is coming from, can successfully form task forces from these built ships in such a way as to provide at least a competitive advantage with an opposing force. The big If is from 1000s of different designs how is the AI to know which one does best against its current threat picture? Right now the AI doesn't even amend its build strategy to counter the strength of its opponents which is dumb. Even if it was able to do all the other strategic things more or less equally with an enemy it doesnt have any fleet manager telling the starports don't build ships with lazors build fucking rockets. Or build lazors but also build lots of Defense from lazors it doesn't have any of that, it doesn't make decisions on the fly either or even every 10 turns re-evaluate it just builds.
