Arms dealing runs

Anyone fuel other war machines to play them off against each other?

I'm still finding my feet in this game, yet to crank up to the mad difficulty levels.  Though has anyone here had any fun building up your military to such an extent that its cheaper (and funnier) to sell off your obsolete/excess units to another faction who is losing a war?  Just to see if it can turn the tables on them?

I've actually tried creating (unsuccessfully) a race that specializes in it, good manufacturing shipyards with good diplomacy skills to make out the credits per ship.  I keep getting out influenced though.

Anyone tried these styles of runs?

PS: What's with the Krynn ALWAYS becoming head of UP?  Influence?  >_>

I did a similar thing.  I was planning to go to war with the Altarians who were currently at war with the Snathi.  The Snathi were too poor to sell them ships, so I gifted them a nice frigate close to their home world.  They used it successfully to drive away the Altarians and save their planet.  :)

Interesting point, to sell/trade old ships, as upgrading is so damned expensive.  Also worth trading the counter to the enemy's WMD weapon choice if you have it.  Without the counter, invasions are a bit too easy.

regarding UP, its population based if I am not incorrect.  The Krynn breed like flies....

I've been naming my ships "Gift to Faction Leader", both for ease of location when gifting, and to track them later, though they do show up as "DEAD" in the treaty details, if they get blown up.

I tend to foster benevolent civs, and have frequently shifted the balance of power by handing over a single ship more powerful than both competing fleets, combined.  The problem is when two civs I like go to war, and I'm trying to balance them against each other.

Then I'm designing custom defenders for the weaker party, with strong defenses, and just enough teeth to make the other side back off.

I've screwed it up a couple times, and watched the one ship then proceed to lay waste to starbases and shipyards.

"Oops."
