Is this a Fleet or a newbie thing?

Hi all!

Just started a brand new game (with the brand new version!). In the very early game, I managed to get another ship from the Graveyards, which I attached as a "fleet" with my Survey ship. On the next turn when I selected this fleet, it gave a warning along the lines that "Ships are out of range", and thus the movement was prohibited thereon. However, I *could* send the fleet to any location available by selecting a destination via GoTo, which seemed very strange to me! So:

1) Is there something I've missed regarding ship ranges?

2) How can I re-organize my fleet so I can get my Survey ship going again, instead of having that slow escort moving along?

3) Is there a bug, or is it just me not playing it right? :)

Best regards,

-E

the survey ship has some life support modules, the other ship probably not, so if you "found" it far away from your next planet/station, it's out of range. fleet range is determined by the ship with the shortest range.

don't know if the goto command ignores range limitations. in my experience i sometimes takes "shortcuts" through "out of range" zones if the target hex is within the allowed movement distance of the next planet/base. maybe that's what you're seeing.

you can select individual ships within the fleet and use the "eject" command to remove them from the fleet. for a fleet of 2 ships, this effectively means they go separate ways as individual ships again. i think there's also a "manage" button/command for fleets where you have some more options to move ships between fleets on the same hex. that shouldn't be required in your case, though. just "eject" one of the two ships.

A fleet's range is equal to the range of the shortest-range ship found within it and the fleet's speed is equal to that of the slowest ship within it. Generally speaking, the ships you find in ship graveyards are somewhat lacking in the range department by comparison to your survey ship and are also typically slower, so it's not a great idea to use them to escort your survey ship. Better to send them home or off hunting pirates.

As far as changing things so that your survey ship can resume its duties: Select the fleet and select the icon of the survey ship or the escorting vessel, and click on 'Eject,' which should pop up in a menu to the right of the fleet panel. This will remove the selected ship(s) from the fleet; if you do this when there are only two ships in the fleet, it will also dissolve the fleet. Ejected ships will be stacked on the same tile as the fleet from which they were ejected (or on the same tile as the other ships which used to compose that fleet) but will not automatically form a fleet; I think if you select multiple ships and then eject them as a group, the ejected ships might form a fleet, but I've never tried it.
