Your little questions about GalCiv 3.

Hello everyone.

Since GalCiv 3 is a massive game, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there with more then one question about the game and its mechanics.
I thought a thread dedicated to asking one or more short questions and (hopefully) getting answers to them by the community could help new players get a better understanding of the game.

Suggested format:
- The person that asks a question makes a reply with the question(s).
- The person answering the question quotes the post with the question and provides an answer.
- No discussions in this thread.

To kickstart the thread I will ask the first question:

Do influence starbases do anything if built in the middle of nowhere or do they have to have a planet in their area of effect to actually provide a bonus?

End of quote

Influence starbases provide 1 influence point for themselves. The assumption is that this single 1 influence point each turn would received the bonus, but there is no where I can find to indicate whether this bonus is applied to the 1 point of influence the starbase generates. Otherwise a planet must be in the starbases range to receive the percentage bonus.

The StarbaseModuleDefs.XML file indicates that the percentage bonuses from most Culture Starbase modules apply to the influence point generated by the starbase; at any rate, most of the modules have a culture modifier targeting a starbase, with the modifier being of the 'multiplier' type and being equal in value to that applied to colonies within the starbase's area of effect. It would appear that the bonus applies only to the host starbase, not to any starbase within the area of effect, so I wouldn't bother trying to boost nearby bases once you get a range extension module or two.
