Campaign tips

I'd like to hear some strategies for beating mission 2. I always seem to find that once I defeat the Drengin fleet, that they no longer produce ships and sit there waiting to be invaded even with 50000 credits. But once I do this the Thalian always decide to declare war and I'm always at a massive tech loss to them, so they stroll around with 100 beam capital ships and if I try to counter they just amass a large number of well rounded ships. And because of the tech disadvantage it's just a losing battle.

The military is not your only weapon. You also have Diplomacy and Influence.

hmm at the end of that map i was allied with the thalan people. they even sent a troop transport an took the final drenign planet while my transport was on the way ;)

i picked the more diplomatic answers in the opening sequence and then once the map actually started i did some trades with the thalan (open border, some tech trades, sold them my first few durantium for some BC per turn etc.). also sent a freighter to their capital (and later with some higher trade tech some more freighters to other planets).

don't really know if my trading with them and doing open borders tipped the scale, but they were somewhat neutral to friendly the whole time and after i got the tech for alliances, they agreed to my alliance proposal.

so i guess it's not necessary to fight against them. you can actually end up with them as your allies.

Yes, one play through I did the exact same, traded and had them super buddy buddy with me, fully green but I never teched to alliances. then they turned on me instantly because my influence was encroaching them.
