Can't start a new game

Raise a support ticket, they will need specific information about you computer and the crash dumps, etc to help.

I woukd suggest the verify local files or whatever its called

I also cannot start a new game. I have tried re-installing from scratch and creating a new race instead of using races I made from previous versions. Crashes on making the map.

Sorry I really think you need to raise a support ticket, it's not a common issue so I think you need proper help from support who will want technical details of your system and dump files.

Yup, having this issue as well. Already created a support ticket with some more details yesterday but no reply as of yet. Will see if it persists after updating to 1.0.

econundrum1, I don't think there's any need to dismiss the post just for not being a particularly common issue, always nice to post here just in case someone else has had a similar problem with a ready solution.

I'm not dismissing it at all, just saying that because it's not a common issue it's likely to be fairly system specific and hence the OP would probably do better to raise a support ticket. 

No harm in posting it here, but I just wanted to suggest again that a support ticket was likely to be more productive for this sort of thing and no one had been able to help since this was posted on the 13th so I wanted to make sure they had raised a support ticket too.

Still having this issue after 1.0, so I am not sure what is going on. Support ticket is obviously filed.

This bug has me really really confused. After updating to 1.0, it seemed to be fixed, but it returned after I set some custom graphics settings (windowed, low preset). I assumed it was tied to this and I could create games again after deleting the prefs file in my games/galciv3.

However, 2 maps later (one small map & the first campaign map), the bug has returned, and the same fix doesn't work anymore. I hope I get a reply on the support ticket soon, as this has me completely stumped.

I have tried to change the map settings like 10 times just now and it crashes each time. I'll look at changing the graphics settings too then. I updated drivers, etc.

Nothing. The game is unplayable.

Please make sure you have a support ticket started.

Have you tried deleting or renaming your "...\my games\galciv3" folder?

I tried it again, but on my laptop instead and the same issue happens! Unplayable on two systems. I have created a second ticket for the laptop and attatched the dump files and all that.

I did file a ticket, I was immediately told to follow the re-install and verify steps. I did this, and it worked, but once I reloaded my custom races and ship designs into documents, I had the same problem again.

I did some file swapping, and eventually figured out that one of my ship design files was causing the crashing.

I've yet to narrow it to one design, I had about 10 or so that I had made in the past 2-3 days and I just took those out and everything started working as expected.

However, I believe i know what happened. I started a turn, went to the designer, and the UP Voting screen must have popped up. I was saving a design and no pop-up appeared, so I cancelled, and then was faced with both the UP Vote screen and my save-popup.

I saved the design, and voted in UP.

So... I'm pretty sure that design is what screwed everything up.

Thank you for this.  I too was having this issue after playing the campaign, creating custom designs.   Then start up a sandbox game, and only Tiny/Small map sizes would create, custom race, standard race, mods enabled, mods disabled.  Deleted the custom designs from the campaign and I was able to start up a Gigantic sized map.

Game crashes to desktop when "building map".  I deleted GalCivIII and re-installed. It still crashes when "Building Map".   I tried QUickStart option.  Crashes when "Building Map".  As mentioned above, "this game is unplayable".   

Hmmm...I deleted all my Custom Ship Designs (kept my custom race) and restarted.    It seems to work.  The game is now playable ?

The problem we have seen is that some people have empty ship designs, no hull, no components, nothing. When the game is building your list of ships it tries to process this and crashes. Exactly as you folks have stated, deleting your ship designs resolves the problem.

We have a "fix" in the 1.02 opt-in where we validate the ship file before we load it. That will keep the crash from happening.

But we still don't know what causes the corrupt ship designs to be made. One player who passed me a broken ship said he created it in a multiplayer game, but we haven't been able to reproduce that as a cause. I'm going to try to create one in the campaign and see if that can be a part of it.

But for now the answer is:

1. On 1.01 or earlier if you delete your custom ships from your My Games directory it should fix this. This solution stinks.

2. On 1.02 (currently available as opt-in) you should be able to play without having to delete anything.

If anyone is still having the issue with 1.02 I would love to get your My Games files so I can see if there is another use case we should be checking for.

I cant start new game either but it crashes immediately after i pres "New Game" and i have yet to design any ships, only did 2 new races. cant delete them cause it crashes b4 i get to screen .....
