Quick question about ship sizes

I have a quick question about ship sizes and i hope someone can explain to me whether this is by design,or a bug.

Alright,i've put together a small ship, using the small hull and the parts attached to it,are no more than 50 in size. Now,i made a medium sized ship, using the medium hull type and the parts i've used all have the size 150 or larger. But when i compare the size of the medium ship with that of the small ship,it doesn't look 3 times larger, but rather about the same size as my fighter.

Does part size even do anything for the overall size of the ship or are the hull types so similar to each other that my battleship wich i will build later on (once i have large hulls unlocked) look like a small fighter as well? Is this working as intended,or is this simply a bug?

EDIT: Added 2 more images, showcasing the problem even better. A size 50 fighter (small hull) compared to a size 500 cruiser (medium hull)

Is this because i'm using a medium sized hull or is there some kind of bug after all?= Also,in the ships thumbnail in the editor as well as the shipyard,it's incredibly small and almost impossible to see and when selected, the camera automatically zooms all the way out.

Here's a screenshot to showcase my problem:

Just a little bump. I'd really like to know whether this is normal or a bug.

I may be wrong, but the way I believe it works is the "scale" of the parts themselves mean nothing when you actual view the ships. Every ship, depending on hull size is automatically scaled up or down to what is considered the "average" size of that hull. Im guessing its more to make it easier to identify what size a ship is just by looking at it. Prevents making a tiny ship be say as big as a capital ship, and vice versa.

Ah i see, so this is intentional. Can't say i'm 100% happy about it,but if that's the way it is,then i'll just accept it. Thanks for answering me :)

All that's left now, is to find out if the ship being shrunk to a tiny dot in the ships thumbnail, is a bug or not.

While you can't exceed a hull's maximum size, you can manipulate hull sizes to be smaller than maximum.

You can do this by offsetting a very tiny part off of your design in the Z axis.

I do this to make tiny and small ships look tiny enough to be carried by my bigger ships.

I've seen the thumbnail issue even when upgrading designs. Sometimes when just adding engines the game will take a different viewing angle for the thumbnail. I hope we are given options for this like in Fallen Enchantress. I would like to select a preset (or better yet given control) of the thumbnail creation.

PS: there is a very small black tube piece in the Terran set, that I recommend, at 10 scale, it is invisible under nearly all circumstances.

Awww, now that explains why the tiny ships in the base designs have those little boxes. They are set to hidden (a button on the palette).

Now that is a neat little trick and it will definately come in handy. Thanks for sharing ;)

I see,so that's how it is. Rather annoying if you ask me,and i too would like to have more control over how and when a thumbnail is made.
